Tom Linder Commissioner WEDNESDAY, MARCH 21, 1951 NUMBER 29 _ 1 By TOM LINDER ee ee on Monday, -and Tuesday, March 20. pose of this meeting is to dis-. ae cotton situation and other prob- agriculture in the United States. COTTON : fore me Foreign Crops and _ This is a publication issued. ited States Department of Ag- Office of yee Agricultural Washington, D. C. It states elease as of Monday, March 286 of this one the quotation of cotton prices is giv- iferent countries of the world. , Mexico, the price is 62.13 seat, and the export and in- ute taxes are 12.07 cents per s makes the price to the ex- 0 cents per pound. aulo, Brazil, the quotation is e per ae with a 3 per cent is 53.16 cents per pound, with ents per.pound tax. This makes ce to the exporter 76.25 cents per The highest grade quoted at 60.50 cents per pound, with ts taxes, making the price to orter 83. 59 cents per pound. Egypt, , the | price ranges from 72.52 y pe nd, with 11.83 cents taxes, ir the cheapest grade and up- or better grades. The best grade din Egypt is 108.40 cents per vith 11.83 cents tax, making the orters 120.23 cents per pound. 3, of course, considerable dif- cotton grown in different ry of Old India, the cae ice to exporter 84.35 cents per MISSIONERS MEETING | VASHINGTON MAR. 19-20 ertheless, these prices show conclusively that the American cotton farmer is not receiving anything like the price that he is entitled to receive under existing con- ditions, | I have before me the same publication Foreign Crops and Markets from the. United States Department of Agriculture marked for release Monday, July 3, 1950, iess than a year ago. At that time, there was 10 cents a pound difference between American Middling ~ 15/16 staple and the best grade of Egyptian cotton. At that time Middling 15/16 cotton in Torreon, Mexico, was 7- cents. per pound cheaper than American Mid- dling. Cotton at Sao Paulo was quoted 6 cents a pound higher than American Middling. Egyptian cotton was quoted 2 to 5 cents a pound higher than Amer- ican Middling, and South American cot- ton was auoted 7 cents a pound higher than American Middling. This showed that even in July 1950, when American _ farmers were being required to plow up _ part of their cotton that the world short- age of cotton was already in existence and that this shortage was not caused by _the War in Korea. Prior to these Government manipula- tions, good American cotton always brought more than South American cot- ton and more than Indian cotton. Now the American farmer is required to pro- duce the cheapest cotton in the world and to produce it in the most expensive country of production in the world. You had beiter keep these things in mind when you go to plan your cotton crop _ this year. THE UNITED STATES GOVERNISENT AND COTTON According to the best information I have been able to obtain, it seems that the Government in Washington does not -permit the export of cotton from this country by private trade, but that all cot- ton exports are handled directly by Gov- ernment Agencies. Allocations are made by our Govern- ment to different countries of the world. Our Government-fixes a quota which may be exported to Great Britain, The _not permitted to export the cotton informed that this American cotton de- livered in Great Britain is worth about '85 cents per pound. This would be in. British Governmentsin turn issues quotas to the cotton mills of Great Britain. The American cotton farmer does not enjoy oe any competitive bidding for his cotton by the mills of Great Britain for the very simple reason that American buyers are line with quotations given from other markets ol the world. This being true, it is evident that the Foreign buyer, Foreign Government or the Foreign mills are being given a grant of around $175.00 out of each bale of American cot- ton which-they buy from farmers. In other words, when shall Plan money from the United States Gevernment and_-all of the taxpayers, it seems that the burden of the Marshall Plan was transferred to the shoulders of {alan the noe American o: (HESS ae Sit ran British Government ceased to draw Mar- the cotton farmer through these arrange- \ | - ments, ceiling and at a price which penalizes the Americ2n farmer about $175.00 on each bale. s which forces the American farm- +- er to seil his cotton under a Government If vou will go through the stores in At- lanta, you will find a great many textiles in the stores which were manufactured in England, in Japan and in other For- eign countries. The American consum- ers, who use these goods, are paying the world market price for the materials that went into them, but the farmer who pro- duces the raw materials in America is not vermitted to get the world market price for the raw materials and, of course, American labor loses the jobs that went into the manufacture of these products . in Foreign countries. MEAT From the Market- Bulletin dated April 14, 1943, I quote as follows: According to the figures of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, from 1910 to 1919 we averaged a total of 27,687,- 000,000 pounds of hogs and beef com- bined. From 1920 to 1929 we averaged 28.146,000,000 pounds of hogs and beef combined. From 1930 to 1939 we averaged (Continued on Page Eight) x PAGE TWO GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all items for publication and_all requests to be put on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE BU.
