Anybody who wants to drink slops ought to get slops at slop De = not at milk prices. PTS When the. Milk Control Board set oie | rice of buttermilk i in Atlanta at 15c, the price was based on buttermilk produced | from Georgia Grade A milk. Ifa distrib- utor cant have that kind of buttermilk, certainly he has no moral right to take 4cs worth of powdered milk and make 15 worth of buttermilk by adding a lit- tle water to it. wide racket. It heads up in Wall Street in the Banking House of Lehman Broth- ers. It is so lucrative that large blocks of stock in some milk distributing com- . not fool away their time and money to make small profits. I suspect that the profits in the powdered milk racket would be as great as the profits in the oil business were it not for the fact Congress practically freed the oil companies of any taxes by allowing them to deduct 27% per cent of their gross income for depletion before they are required to ae- _ count for any tax on income whatsoever. The Georgia law, Senate Bill 185, as found in the Acts of the General As- sf sembly of 1950, requires all milk for human consumption in Georgia to be Georgia Grade A milk and specifies that ) -riculture) prohibits the use of milk that i powdered milk or condensed skim milk ~ now available is of Georgia Grade A of slops for ae is a nation- ries are owned by millionaire oil men other men of big business who do | have undertaken to make it appear that - small farmers and those now producing NUMBEB ve this includes buttermilk, chocolate milfk and milk beverages. This law (not the Commissioner of Me is not Georgia Grade A. None of the quality. If it were Georgia Grade A quality, it would not be powdered or | condensed skim because there is an over- whelming demand for whole milk of that quality. aa Subject only to Court Orders, these milk laws will be rigidly enforced. pe MANUFACTURING GRADE MILK _ Some of the editors referred to above manufacturing grade milk would be cut out of a market for their milk if the Georgia law is enforced. This is nothing except the old Hitler principle of trying to divide to conquer. They would undertake to build a wall of animosity between the producers of manufacturing grade milk and the pro- ducers of Grade A milk for. fluid con- sumption. In our modern economy there is a place, properly, for manufacturing grade milk such as for making of cheese, for mehow we cant seem to get very ex- he downtown papers barrage - of Agriculture Tom ft repeated charge that es state money to publish his views about cal questions, or the more recent one is keeping much needed Grade A milk some se of a aecrandtie 1 the average house-wife, grocer, farm- no man could conscientious-. one group without Gaoned to us at least). _from_time to. time about : , we-think it inder was : the | AND TOM tainly, cig has mentioned, approved, and crit- icized editorially many of the roposed laws, appointed administrators and elected officials. This, we believe, is the job for which he was elected. The average man, pressed with ever increasing federal forms, taxes, etc., has little enough time to look after his livelihood, much less attempting to keep up with what is being done behind his back. As for the current milk argument, we would suggest that the milk or dairy industry continue under the Department of Agricul- ture, where it properly belongs, regardless of who may become Commissioner. One ironic fact mentioned in the daily paper editorial which stresses Linders incom- petence for his job,-regarding the milk indus- try in Georgia, says that a Georgia dairyman with an investment of $150,000, has been pro- hibited from selling milk because investiga- tors found a small amount of powdered milk on his premises. We have no argument against a powdered milkso long as we dont have to drink itbut it appears just a little bit pecu- liar that a $150,000 dairy would be buying powdered milk and we cant help but wonder _ why. they needed it. d this is strictly guess work, (Continued on Page Eight) we imagine that the dairy in question is one of the ones that could afford to buy the pas- teurization equipment necessary to sell milk in Atlanta under a city ordinance passed several years ago which very effectively re- duced the number of dairies serving the metropolitan area, increased the price to the retail purchaser, and all under the name of health and sanitation. After finding mud, 1/4 inch deep, in bot- tles of milk delivered to Atlantas Grady hospital, we cant blame any of the big dairy monopolies for bragging about their pasteuri- zation equipment. After all, the mud was pasteurized. Actually, what we would.-really like would be a chance to get real Grade A milk, from dairies inspected and approved by competent authorities. We dont particularly care wheth- er the dairymans investment is $150 or $150, 000our main interest is in how. good is the milk his cows produceanybody can buy powdered milk from the grocer. And, just to keep the record clear, no one on the Times staff has seen, written or talked to Mr. Linder since before World War II, but we cant help but wonder why he gets so much adverse publicity in the dailies. Bossy probably wonders tooor maybe she knows. ao PAGE TWO GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all items tor publication and all requests to be put on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE BU REAU OF MARKETS 222 STATE | CAPITOL, Atlanta.
