To provide Federal-State In- - -spection Service for fresh fruits and vegetables at shipping points *in the State of Georgia. The objective is to make the inspection of fresh fruits and vegetables, authorized by Congress, more widely available to growers and shippers _ in Georgia than would be possible with- out the cooperation of. the Georgia De-. partment of Agriculture. Under a Mar- keting Agreement between the producers and shippers of peaches in Georgia and the U. S. Department of Agriculture, all interstate shipments of peaches produced in Georgia must be inspected under the above agreement. This inspection work is self-supporting. No. 2. Federal-State Market News Service on peaches at Macon and water- melons at Cordele. The objective is to give producers, consumers and dealers in the State of Georgia information con- cerning supplies, prices and distribution _ of fresh peaches and watermelons and to obtain market information for transmis- sion to important consumer and _ distrib- uting markets in the United States. This is a 50-50 service. No. 3. Federal-State grading work on butter, cheese, eggs and poultry. Agreements are .. ready to be put into operation as soon as the demand warrants, No. 1. Federal-State Inspection oo grading service on additional agricul- _ tural commodities and products. No. 2. Federal-State Inspection Serv- ice on processed fruits and vegetables. No. 3. Federal-State Inspection Serv- iceon live and dressed poultry and dress- ed domestie rabbits for condition and wholesomeness. We also have Cooperative Agreements with the Bureau of Animal Industry of _the USDA under which systematie cam- _ aign is being conducted for control and into Cooperative - one billion dollars less eradication af Tuberculosis and Brucel- losis (Bangs disease) in the State. . The progress that Georgia has made in the control of these diseases in com- parison with other states has been given to you in former articles in the Bulletin. However, to show just what definite progress has been made in terms of cat- tle and dollars, the following is very in- teresting and informative. | I have before me the latest complete report released by the U. S, Department of Agriculture, Farm Credit Administra- tion, under date of April 1949. This shows that in 1941, the total farm income from livestock in the United States was $6,439,100,000 and in 1948 it was $17,- 424, 859, 000. This was an increase of in- come ae livestock for the entire United States of 170 per cent during the seven years. | According A the same report, the in- come from livestock in Georgia in 1941 was $41,199,000, while-in 1948 Georgias income from livestock had increased to. $164,977,000 or just four times as much in 1948 as it was in 1941. come from livestock in 1948, was four times as much as it was in 1941, when I came into office, The figures for 1949 would be still more favorable to Georgia, but are not yet available in full, how- ever, I do have some items which show the progress we are still making. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Agricultural Eco- nomics, in a report dated April 27, 1950, the cash receipts from the sale of meat animals for the Nation as a whole were in 1949 than it was in 1948, while in Georgia the - cash receipts from the sale of livestock increased $4,464,000. Georgia increased while the Nation, as a whole, was losing 10 per cent. According to the U. S. Department of Agriculture, the number of cattle and calves on the farms in Georgia, as of January 1, 1950, were 11 percent more than in 1949. According to the same re- port, the number of cattle and calves on the farms in the United States increased only 3% during the same period. The Nation increased 3% while Georgia in- creased 11%, The value of all cattle in Georgia in- creased from $80.60 per head January 1, 1949, to $83.30. per head January 1, 1950. Balance of nation, DECREASED from $135.00 per head to $123.00 per head. In another issue, I will give you a very revealing story as to the progress we have made and are making in all lines of agriculture in Georgia.
