Te: om Linder, Commissioner WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 1950 ek, Phursday, May 18 in inty and aay, May 20, he first season for the Toombs arket. There were numbers of Iso from other counties in that , d other. crops will be coming jarket in a few days. olqiiitt County market is in a State where the growing and truck crops has already progress for-several years and a ariety of crops were being auc- ne here Saturday. : d d with a great deal of interest the planting-of pole ans usually demand ce than ordinary snap beans. ty. cooperation and enthusiasm f farmers, but of business peo- ounty. and Municipal Officials, laces were tremendously en- ; an omen of the future arkets. Jesus, walking on the Sabbath Day with his Disciples, answered, his critics by - saying that man was not made for the. | Sabbath; but the Sabbath was made for mar: In like manner, it is also true, that man was not made forthe land, but the land was made for man, and he was com- manded to tend it and*keep it. - It is, therefore, obvious that. so long as a large percentage of our people are deeply rooted in the soil America need never fear for lack of an army of patriotic people who will defend it to the last. - Each Farmers Market that is built is but a link in the chain. Last week con- tracts were let for initial buildings at - A contract. Sylvania and Waynesboro, for the initial building; at Thomson, will ~ be let as soon_as the-bids can be received. And, we expect to assume State control of the market, at Augusta, within | sixty wdays.\ << ~ Markets will soon be in operation at _ Leesburg, Donalsonville and Columbus and this gives the State a chain of mar- kets reaching entirely across the State- from the Savannah to the Chattahoochee, and extending as far North as Toccoa and Rome, making a total number of twenty- five markets. State ene peo one become available _ by fiscal years and are expended. by quarters, in each fiscal year. For that reason, the funds for further develop- ments on these markets, and for improve- -ments-on- them, become available grad- ually and therefore can be used only as they become available. - We have made tremendous progress over the years and especially during the last ten-years. At the rate we are now going it will be a comparatively short time until we can hope to see proper cold storage and proper facilities and equipment for grading, packing . and labeling of these Georgia products so that they will command a premium in the markets of the country. The adding of these facilities will, of al buildings on a course, require additi Parner of these markets, but those who have visited these markets.must be im- pressed by the fact that every building is of brick, or concrete_and steel. And each one has a foundation as solid as the ground itself. This practice is being fol- lowed. so that as additional money be-. comes available it can be used for new As fast as possible we are putting in large truck scales for the convenience of the farmers, truckers and, merchants -on these markets. And, in a_ very. short while we will begin to install a teletype ~ system which will provide instantly up- to-the-minute -information, on the marxet, _to farmers and buyers as to prices pre- vailing all over the country. It is also'my purpose to ask the next session of the. Legislature to provide funds for establishing a pilot transfer market at or near Washington City and this will provide a tremendous outlet for our farm products into the smaller towns of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Mary- land and Virginia. Such a market should double the demand for the products of Georgia farms. : It is the development of such a market- ing system which will make practically possible a diversified agriculture in Geor- gia such as we have talked of and dream ed of for years. You may travel from East to West, from the Atlantic to the Pacific and North to South, from Canada to Mexico, and no where can you find a spot which has so many advantages and so few dis- advantages as we have in this State. Certainly no where can you find a great- er people and surely we must have in Georgia the vision and leadership to get the benefit of these great advantages. The cooperative effort now being-made by all-agricultural agencies, together with the enthusiastic support of our busi- ness leaders and State and local officials, combined with the enthusiastic determi- nation and intelligent efforts of Georgia farmers, is bound to result in our doing great things in the next few years...
