WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 1950 Commissioner = NUMBER 3} \RKET BULLETIN EDITORIALS ~ _ THE FARMERS | | | | in many cases to manufacture substitutes for their cotton. Cheap paper bags, paper sacks, paper ee napkins. paper towels and many other = articles are made from this pne pulp, ~ When the farmer goes out and cuts ~ pulpwood and sells it under OPA fiat for $5.65 per cord below the market, he is thereby contributing to forcing down the price of his own cotton. Pulpwood producers in the South should demand an equal price with other sections for their pulpwood. Pulpwood producers of the South should simply quit cutting and shipping any pulpwood until the price is equalized. It is useless to argue. It is useless to show the injustice. Federal bureaus are not concerned with injustices. They will only pay attention to those who deter- mine to do something about it. Southern pulpwood producers can do something about it if they simply quit cutting oulp- wood until they are put on an equality. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture ~The Market Bulletin of Wednesday, February 27, 1946, carried the following article: ; Pulpwood Price Increased In Southern States By OPA In the Market. Bulletin of January 30th, 1946, I called attention to the discrimination in the OPA ceiling price of pulpwood in the Southern states and the OPA ceiling price on pulpwood in some other states. : The following news item from Washing- ton, D. C., under date of February 19th shows that OPA has granted an increase on : - Southern pulpwood of $1.40 per cord. The news item from Washington is reproduced : herewith: | PULPWOOD GETS $1.40 CORD RAISE Washington, D. C., Feb.. 19Pulp- wood producers in Georgia and 10 other southern states received an immediate increase of $1.40 a cord for their product according to an Associated Press report which told of the OPA raise in ceiling prices. The raise was granted upon re- commendation of the civilian production administration to help insure Eoonued output. At the same time and for the same area, the agency increased by $1.40 a cord the ceilings for excelsoir wood, chemical cord wood, stave and heading bolts, in- sulation, felt cord wood and related items. Pulp and paper mills will absorb the in- - creases ,and there will be no changes 4m ceilings for their products, which in- | inde newsprint, magazine paper and con- tainer board. = Under the terms of the above raise, the Sta OPA ceiling price on pulpwood loaded on 2 cars, is $9.00 per cord for pine. There i is a raise of $1.85 per cord on south: ern hardwood, rough. which raises'the price of rough hardwood, f. o. b. cars, to $9.50 per cord. On peeled longleaf pine and other select stock, f.o.b. mills, there is a raise of $2.20 per cord, making the present. ceiling price $14.20 per cord. All of these prices were effective February 18th, 1946. This is under Amendment 6 to R. M. P. R. 387 regulations. It is my understanding that this raise ap- plies to ten southern states east of the Miss- issippi river. Since February 1946, there has beer additional increase in the price of pulp- ' wood to farmers. This morning, I called Senator Law- ton Ursrey at Hazlehurst, who gave me the current price for pulpwood at $12.90 per unit F. O. B. cars at Hazlehurst. This means that the price per unit of pulpwood at Hazlehurst has increased from $7.60 per unit in 1946 to $12.90 per unit now, or an increase of $5.30 per unit. L also called Mr. Belmont Dennis, Pub- lisher at Covington, who tells me that the wholesale price of newsprint is sub- ~stantially the same today as it was four years ago, when pulpwood was a little over half-of what it is today. Had it not been for the Commissioner of Agriculture keeping up with what was going on in Washington and finding out the comparative prices being paid to farmers in the South and farmers in New England, and had it not been for these facts being carried in the Georgia Farm- ers Market Bulletin, the farmers of Georgia would have had no way on earth of finding out these vital facts for them- selves. If-you hear some one complaining about editorials in the Market Bulletin, look under the chips because there are bugs under the chips. It is to the interest of some people to Reap the farmers in the dark. These two articles demonstrate clearly what happens to farmers when _ their business is put in the hands of appointed Boards rather than in the hands of their elected officials. o TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture f \ PAGE TWO GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all items for publication and all requests to be put on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE BU.
