WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19. 1950 NUMBER 33 EATHER nber that nature brings its 1em as best he can, since there yer forty years ago, in 1910, in | ounty, running a cotton plant- 2 it was so cold that I wore and I was then planting over | hucks to feed to the woods cat-_ e | latory License, There is no charge | you now sell, ee en the oak leaves believed in early planting was because they did not have or use commercial ferti- lizers and for that reason, it required a greater lergth of time for crops to grow and mature, Corn that was not planted: early very often encountered hot, dry weather before silking and tasselling time, and as a result, the corn crops were very short. . The vagaries of the weather are one of the main reasons why diversified agricul- ture is much safer than depending on any one crop whatever that crop may be. There has been so much said about one crop with reference to the old cotton farm- ing that we often forget that a one crop system is bad whether that one crop is cotton, corn, cattle, potatoes or other crop. - This is why crop rotation, soil-building _ and crop diversification is the best insur- ~ ance that a farmer canhave. Last week, I attended the Blue Lupine Festival at the old Dooly Camp-ground not far from. Vienna. This old tabernacle has stood through the storms of more than 100 years. All of the upright pillars, the sills and the joists were hewed from long straight yellow pines. Our forefath- ~ ers did not remain long in any new settle- ment until they gathered together and with ax and saw built a place of Divine Worship. On those old timbers, which have stood through the storms of the years, can be plainly seen the ax marks where they were squared out. Anyone who has had any experience in cutting out and hewing a square timber out of a - round pine tree 40 feet long can appreci- ate the tremendous amount of hard labor NOTICE TO DEALERS IN INSECTICIDES, FUNGICIDES, SEED TREATMENTS, ETC. The Georgia Economic Poisons _Law of 1950 requires all dealers, in all types of insecticides, fungicides, seed treatments, weed killers, rat _kiHers, etc., to have a Dealer's Regu- for this license. Just write the De- ' partment of Agriculture, giving your name and address and show the name of the manufacturer of the products - ALL MANUFACTURERS MUST "REGISTER THEIR PRODUCTS. that was required for this building. The main court is approximately 40 x 60 feet, ~ with a 40 foot shed on all four sides, mak- ing the entire tabernacle approximately . 80 x 100 feet. There is probably no edi- fice in Georgia today, however fine, that represents as much sweat and hard labor to any one individual, as was required of the individuals who built this rustic tem- ple in the wild woods of South Georgia. The Blue Lupine Festival was a great success and was largely attended by men and women from more than 40 counties, with a considerable sprinkling of people ~ BB from other states. Riding along the highways and see- ing the beautiful fields of Blue Lupine coming into full fruition, some of it al- ready in bloom and some with seed well developed, and realizing how much this crop of Blue Lupine means to the soil building of those fields, one could not help but reflect on the bounteous hand of na- | ture which has-:given to man such a crop with which to restore the fertility of the. Jand, which once produced those virgin yellow pines, the sight of which would be inspiring to the present generation. After the morning program, delicious _ barbecue was served and then the busi- -ness of the day was transacted. Every we year the Blue Lupine festival attracts more and more people and every year Blue Lupine becomes more and more an established part of agriculture on Georgia farms. : In different parts of Georgia, there is to be found places of worship built by the hands of men and women who carved _ this civilization out of the great wilder- ness, trusting in God and their right hand, building a place to honor Him the same as they built a shelter for themselves and their children. great mechanical invention and _ great scientific discoveries, it would be a won- derful thing if at least once a year the peo- ple of Georgia could gather themselves together at these old land marks of our glorious traditions and there, in spirit, commune with the men and women who trod that sacred earth many, many years ago and built this civilization throuch their faith, using the crude tools of their day. With their faith and self-reliance coupled with modern tools and scientific knowledge, we could build a country that would be the wonder of the ages. The vagaries and uncertainty of the weather but try our steel as the metal is a when heated in the forge and a given a cold dip in icy water TOM LINDER, _ Commissioner of Agriculture _ Veet ree In this modern. day of E ie x .
