S id now make our plans to have food e summer, food through the nd food through the cold months Geo Sele ds and the animals through | FUEL. |< os AO 4 - WEDNESDAY, APRIL 12, 1950 to make their farms as near self-sustain- t ing as possible. The farmer, large or small, who make his farm produce the. | food for his family and the feed for. his. livestock is more apt to accumulate mon- ey than is the farmer who tries to produce money crops with which to buy food and_ feed that he needs. There is hardly a place in Georgia where, with proper preparation, planning and effort, the farmer cannot produce enough corn, sweet potatoes, Irish pota- toes, vegetables and truck crops, meat, chickens and eggs, milk and butter, fruits and berries for himself and family and ~ enough feed for his livestock. | If the average farm family will figure the amount of money required to buy these things, or the major part of them, it is astonishing how much canbe saved by producing them at home. _ figure the amount of cotton, peanuts, to- ~ pacco, hogs, cattle or other money crops that-he will have to make and sell-in or- - der to buy these supplies, he will find that -a very large part of whatever profit he ean make on money crops will be con- sumed in buying his living if he fails to produce it on the farm. * The most profitable market that any farmer has for his products is on the farm. Ifa farmer produces meat for his table, he gets the retail price for that meat be- cause he would have had to pay the retail price if he had gone to the store to buy it. Tf he raises hogs for the market, he must sell them at the wholesale price. The same principle holds true for every item that he buys which he could produce for himself. Everything he buys, he buys at retail or at best, very close to the retail price. Everything he sells, he sells at. wholesale, and, in many cases, he sells at a price even lower than the wholesale price. Every time he sells something that he grows, in order to buy something that he could have grown, he takes a drubbing. When he sells what he pro- duces in order to buy what he could have produced, he is forced to give a-large part be n endowed with the pow- -[ of his crop.in profits to the middleman, and think for himself should 4 sson from nature. Wer the cost of transportation, etc. This is the reason that, in the long-run, . farmers, who make their farms the nearest self-sustaining, are the farmers who are more likely to aceumulate money and property. Ee : et Ae: cunder modern con- yone" arm. oney, an Like ever 0 farm O eS | And, then on the other hand, if he will | Tom Linder, Commissioner | nd Natu a - he is financially destitute. NUMBER 34 time goes on he continually needs more money. - Under modern conditions, the fermer needs electricity for light and power. He needs trucks and automobiles for trans- he portation, he needs more and more X- pensiveequipment to do the job, he needs - more money for taxes, he needs more money to properly clothe his family and to educate his children. He needs better. houses in which to live and better bans Se for his livestock. He needs more.and bet- ter fences, terraces and pastures. ae For that reason, he needs more and bet- ter money crops with better markets and better prices. All of these things I am - fully familiar with. This, however, does. not change the fundamental principles that the near self-sustaining his farm is the better chances he will have to provide _ the other things which he needs: 2 278 In Georgia; we have thousands of small farmers, some with a few acres of their. own, some who rent land, some who are share-croppers. Perhaps the small farm- er feels the need of producing food for ; himself, but.at the sam time feels that he is unable to produce this food because Perhaps he cannot do many of the things he would : dike to do, but certainly he can do some of them. he can borrow one. ens, pernaps he can set some If he cannct buy a-cow, perhaps If he has no chick- eggs and toes, perhaps he cen get a few draws or some vine cuttings that he can set out anc grow potatoes. Most anyone can get a few garden seed and can plant a few rows of se sugar cane or sorghum. If he has no hogs perhaps he can plant some peanuts, corr or sweet potatoes and get a neichbor te fatten some hogs.on shares. Lots of time: where there is a will, there is a way. The world today is in the mcst uncer: tain condition thet it has ever been. There is less certainty how we will come out or what we are going to do. There has = landed in a wild country when it was more essential for the farmer to have at least a portion of his food needs and to be less dependent on buying them, The more we try to provide food for ourselves, the more independent we will be and the more nearly can every man sit under his own vine and fig tree. It is Easter time, it is the beginning of the New Year. Lets make it the best year that we know how. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture i wip. raise some chickens.
