Total farm- e from marketings last year was. 8,575,000. oe remained as the most encouraging part of the marketing reports with a drop of slightly more than 1 per cent in Georgia. iotevey, crop receipts plummeted al- most 20 per cent as the elements combined with a declining. market to plague+the -farmer. 7 Individual income reports from the var- ious crops have not been compiled to date. However. production reports show tre- mendous declines for cotton, peaches and pecans. = The value of the 1949 cotton crop was estimated at about 28 per cent below that of 1948. Corn maintained its value almost entirely but a 20 per cent increase in pro- duction was necessary to bring in the same amount of money as the 1948 crop brought. Peanuts visited 30 per cent in produc- ; tion with only slight price variations. To- bacco saw a slight increase in receipts, due largely to a tremendous increase in production. . sage Pecans had the worst year of all the crops. Its decline last year from the 1948 _ level was estimated at 60 per cent. Peach- es dropped 30 per cent as well as most of the remainder of the atniie: farm income Sweet potatoes, however, were walled at $13,000,000 in Georgia in 1948 after a 20 per cent increase in production. Georgia Sire 7 : k had previously been a big sweet potato Te producer, but receipts from this crop were Seen low in. meee of ie ie be Fie - TAXES Taxes are now higher than they have peanuts, ever been in the history of this country, This is true of Federal taxes, State taxes, City taxes and County taxes. If total tax collections remain at present figures. while income of farmers and the nation should continue to decline, it would be but a short time until 50 per cent out of every dollar earned by Americans would be required to pay taxes. We may see this. very condition by the end of another tw elve months. DEMANDS FOR TAX MONEY The demand by the general public for Government benefits_of every kind is steadily on the increase. As prices and income decline, the demand for Govern- - ment help will skyrocket. In my opinion, the time is not very far distant when the benefits and the Governments demand - for taxes from the people will reach a stalemate. Then, what is going to hap- pen? Tt is certain that more taxes will be re- quired for the State Government to car- ry on in all its many phases and fune- tions, and especially to increase appro- priations for common schools and wel- fare payments, but it is just as certain that the people cannot pay more taxes if the income from farming, business and industry should continue to decline.
