Einder.. Commissioner WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1. 1950 NUMBER 26 PACKING es, nerauats, truckers and have come to realize the ucts, carrying the eye ap- onsumer. The production of cts and proper grading with the soil, seed, fertilizer ation. You cannot produce ducts on land that is unsuited BG You -eannot eee ie properly graded and that a good job of production and mar- keting requires the close cooperation of the State Department of Agriculture, the Extension Forces and the yan al teachers over the State. ~~ In going erouni token county to coun- ty. I have had the opportunity of con- tacting a great many County Agents, Vocational Agricultural Teachers and Vocational Instructors of Veterans Farm Training Program. Last week Te met with the Market Director, Vocational Education, and Mr. TG. Walters, tional Agricultural Education, and some cf their aids. We discussed.the problem of production and marketing very fully ~and Dr. Mobley and Mr. Walters fully approve the idea and necessity for co- _ operative effort between their men over the State and the Market Managers at the Farmers Markets. Teas determined to have meetings at each of the markets as early as prac- tical with Market men, Vocational men and farmers for the purpose of dissemi- nating all the information possible and for arousing enthusiasm and interest in the minds of Market men, Vocational men and farmers to do the best possible job this year. During this current week, we hope to managers from over the State in my of- | fice and invited Dr. M. D. Mobley, State ate Supervisor, Voca- / be able to set up an itinerary for these meetings and as soon as this itinerary is definitely fixed, we will publish it so that all interested parties will know when and where the nearest of these meetings will be to the different com- munities, and it is hoped that many farmers will attend and we feel that it ~ would be beneficial for businessmen to attend these meetings so that they in turn can be of assistance to farmers in getting proper seed, fertilizer and con- tainers for packaging in the most. eco- nomical way. - We have'a tremendous big job to do. The Department of Agriculture, Exten- Roe: OD CROPS FOR MARKET sidn and Vocational people will all be up to our eyes, but we must put the jor It is a must. , The Experiment Stations have done over. a splendid job and have prepared val- _ uable information which is available with regard to a great many crops suit- ed to the different sections of the State : and this information will be made avail- | . able at these meetings. Re zi _ GRADING ~ Thave discussed with Mr.H. M. Riley, District Supervisor, Federal-State In- spection Service, the possibility of hav- ing a Federal Inspector go around and attend these meetings and we will have such a man on hand at the meetings. During the marketing season, we will also do all that we can to aid farmers in putting their products on the market in a proper condition. There is one funda- mental rule that we can all remember which will very much simplify grading and packing to have a quality product. Tf we will but remember that other peo- ple like to eat the same kind of food that we do. If we go out to pick beans; we should pick the same kind of beans that we want on our table. Beans that ar too old and tough for our own table are not desired by other consumers and are, therefore, a dreg on the market. They not only sell cheap, but they tend to pull down the price on good beans. Tnsect damage also makes vegetables undesirable for our own table and like- wise make them hard to sell and pull the price down on the better products un- less the better products are graded to standard grades and vroperly packed. The same general rule applies to all foo? crops. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture MARCH 15 PAGE TWO MARKET of notice.
