1 - | i i Georgia _E 3 Pie Linder, Commissioner Gee 4 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1950 ORN FOR GEORG roducing here illuminating the use of hybrid seed corn SoS 35 Seber si 8 Harry L. Brown or C. C, Murray or George H. King ticle is the result of an agree- ed out between the Commis- Agriculture, the Dean of the Agriculture and Directors of t Stations in order to pro- a farmers from being impos- in the purchase of hybrid seed, f the State Department of Ag- , the College of Agriculture, the m Forces and the Experiment ave been holding monthly on the first Wednesday in each order to work out mutual prob- coordinate our work so that operation might be attained ompanying article is one of the of benefits that have accrued unt of these meetings. - _TOM LINDER sioner of Agriculture amber of bushels of corn grown is on the inerease in Georgia. five-year period, 1939-44, the ere was 11.1 bushels. During e-year period, the average Jd was 14.1 bushels. In 1948, d increased to 15.5 bushels and theaverage per acre yield of Georgia was approximately 18 Tn ten years time, the acreage Georgia has been reduced ap- ly one million acres, but, due reased yield per acre, the total FER sn. SEC Gare ; prvie tl; Tenn (Oy production has been increased by ten million bushels. : This change has been due, according | to our Extension service agronomists, to better land made possible by acreage re- _ duction, to soil improvement, better. fertilizing and spacing, better cultural practices, and the use of better hybrids and varieties. ~The part played by hybrid corn in- these increased yields is causing great interest in the use of hybrids. In 1941, only 0.7 per cent of Georgias corn acre- age was in hybrid corn, while in 1949, hybrids accounted for 13 per cent of the corn acreage. The year 1950 will find this percentage practically doubled. The added interest on the part .of the farmer means that much effort will be made to meet his requests. This added interest also makes it important that certain facts concerning hybrid corn should be observed. _ First, because a corn is a hybrid does not mean that it is better than some of- our existing better varieties. Many hy- brids will be offered for sale that are not as desirable as Whatleys Prolific, Goods Golden Prolific, Hastings Pro- lific, Neals Paymaster, and others. The farmer sheuld be cautious, therefore, in buying seed corn just because it is a hy- brid. It will be to his interest to deter- mine from the results of his nearest ex- periment station whether the corn which he may be thinking of planting is any better than the corn he is accustomed to planting. Second hybrid corn is highly selective of its environment. Hybrid corn grown successfully in North Georgia when grown in South Georgia may be con- sumed by the weevil. Hy- brid corn bred for South Georgia conditions may have reduced yields when planted in North Georgia. Here, again, the farmer should secure the results of his nearest station to de- termine what hybrid is adapted to his farm. The accompanying map shows: the adaptability range of certain hybrids developed by Federal and State ex- periment stations insofar as corn grown for crib storage is concerned. On. this map are indicated counties in which tests were conducted by the experiment stations, . and recommendations are made based on these tests. # Atlanta, Ga. 101, JIN 27 do well. North of Macon, Ga. 101 N.C. 27 and Dixie 17 are recommended. Dixie 18, normally regarded as a Coastal Plain hybrid, because of its weevil resistance and non-lodging qualities is being grown _ successfully as far North as Griffin. South of Macon, Dixie 18 and Florida W lare the hybrids recommended. Dixie 18 shows superior yields over Fla. 101, particularly in the Upper Coastal Plain, but farmers desiring a white corn will find Fla. W 1 satisfactory. The otlier hy- brids mentioned, Ga. 101, Tenn. 10, Dixie 17 and N. C: 27, when grown in the Coastal Plain, should be used only as an early hogging off crop and under n conditions should an attempt be made to save the corn for crib storage. Due to the large number of commercial hybrids of- fered for sale it is impossible to classify them clearly. Tests have been made on most of them by the experiment stations and the farmer may secure information concerning the adaptability of these com- mercial hybrids by writing his nearest experiment station. Reliable seed deal- ers should also be well enough acquaint- ed with the product they are selling that they will not sell a poorly adapted hy- brid. Farmers will also benefit by re- - ferring to Bulletin 547 which may be se- cured from Georgia Agricultural Ex- tension Service, Athens, Georgia. Third, hybrid corn seed for planting must be bought each year. Tests show that, with hybrid corn, the yield will be reduced about 20 per cent the first year where seed corn is saved from the pre- ceding crop. The production of hybrid seed corn is a highly specialized and exe pensive process. Even with the high exe penses necessary in its.production, the farmer is still able to buy his seed corn at a cost of approximately one dollar per acre Which is cheap as contrasted to other crops. Jf the farmer will bear these facts in mind he should not be disappointed in his choice of seed. He should also. re- member that his experiment stations, extension workers, and other agricul- tural workers are always glad to guide him In making a wise selection for his particular farm. NOTICE This is the last week of this session of the Legislature. A number of things connected with the Legislature will be of interest to the farmers, particularly with regard to the Department of Agri- culture. Next week I will give you a resume of these legislative events, TOM LINDER Commisefoner of Agriculture "g % PAGE TWO, GEORG IA MARKET BULLETIN Address al] items for publication and all requests to be put on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE BU- REAU OF MARKETS, 222 STATE, CAPITOL, Atlanta.
