COMMISSIONER Editorial By TOM LINDER have before me some most interest- g figures taken from, U. . Census Agriculture, prepared by the Bu- of Census. In 1890, the population of the United es was 63,046,438 persons. In 1944, ir population had increased to 138,- 3,449. Our population increased al- t 120 per cent. We had consider- more than twice as many people 944 as we had in 1890. CORN In 1889, we planted 72 million acres \d made 2,122,000,000 bushels. This approximately 30 bushels per acre ta of all the people. In 1944, we planted 84 million acres 1d produced 2,788,000,000 ~ bushels. was about 33 bushels per acre, but . the increased population, : it nounted to only about 20 bushels per ta. Our production of corn per rose from 30 bushels per acre to ushels per acre, but our production 2orn per capita declined from 54 ishels to 20 bushels. ee corn is the basis of hog produc- it naturally follows that the pro- n of hogs, as well as beef cattle pita, declined in substantially the ratio. Lets see what the govern- figures show. Tn 1890, the number of hogs on farms oT million, but in 1945, the number ogs had declined to 46 million. 1890, we had 57 million hogs for m. In 1945, we had 46 million hogs 38 million people, or one hog for iree people. Our number of hogs com- ed with the human population is one-third as much as it was in 1890. OATS 1889, we planted 28 million acres ats and produced 809 million bush- s, Or approximately 29 bushels per re. This was 13 bushels of oats for ich person in the country. Tn 1945, we planted 35 million acres produced 1,041 million bushels. was still 30 bushels per acre or antially the same as in 1889. How- r, with 138 million people; we only iced a fraction over 7 bushels of WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 1948 iow LONG. EED OURSELVES? NUMBER ee CAN WI T bushels for each person. id was about 34 bushels of corn per | icreased our acreage about illion people, almost one hog to one oats' for each person, where we had pro- duced 13 bushels per person in 1889. Our production of oats per person fell off almost 50 percent. WHEAT In 1889, we planted 33 million acres in wheat and prduced 468 million bushels. This was an.average of a lit- tle more than 14 bushels per acre. It amounted to a little more than 7 bushels of wheat for each man, woman and child in the United States. In 1944, we planted 58 million acres and produeed 1032 million bushels of wheat. This was approximately 18 bushels per acre and a little more than While we AO 2 per cent, we only increased our production per acre about 30 per cent. Our pro- duction of wheat per capita, even with the tremendous wheat crops of the war years, is no greater than it was in 1889. SWEET POTATOES a Our acreage planted to sweet pota- - toes increased from 524 thousand acres - in 1889 to 673 thousand acres in 1944. Our production increased from 43 mil- lion to 63 million bushels: Our produc- tion of sweet potatoes per person, how- | ever, declined from two-thirds of a bushel in 1889 to about one-half bushel in ~ 1944, COMMERCIAL FERTILIZERS In 1889, the total cost of commercial fertilizers for agricultural purposes was just a little more than 38 million dol- lars. Today, the cost of commercial fertilizers is enormous, running, per- haps, 500 million dollars. COTTON In 1889, we planted 20 million acres in cotton and produced 7 million bales or one-third of a bale per acre. In 1944, we planted 19 million acres in cotton and made 11,838,000 bales. Our pro- duction of cotton per acre increased from one-third of a bale per. acre to two-thirds of a bale per acre. But our production of cotton per person de- clined from 1 bale for each 9 persons to 1 bale for each 111% persons. INDIVIDUAL STATES I have before me _ corresponding figures for a number of individual states and it is most interesting to note that, on the whole, the change that has occurred in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, is about the same as the change that has occurred in the nation as a whole, It is also remarkable to note how close ly the figures for these southeastern states parallel each other. GEORGIA : In 1890, there were 1,396,362 hogs on farms in Georgia, and in 1945, we had 1,526,615. So you see that when it comes to hogs, we have far out-stripped the nation as a whole. Our acreage in oats has decreased from 516 thousand to 288 thousand from 1890 to 1945, but our production increased from 4,667,000 to 7,578,000. This was an increase in production per acre from 9 bushels in 1890 to more than 29 bushels per acre in 1945. Our acres in wheat declined from 196,000 to 181,000 acres, but our pro- duction increased from 1,000,000 to 2,600,000. Our Georgia cotton crop declined from 3,345,000 acres in 1890, to 1,281,- 000 acres in 1945, or a decrease in acreage of about 60 per cent. However, our production in bales declined from 1,191,000 to 807,000 or a decrease in production of about 30 per cent. Our corn crop in Georgia increased from 2,582,000 acres in. 1890 to 3,251 000 acres in 1945. Our production in bushels increased from 29 million to 3 million. In addition to these staple crops, Georgia has, in recent years, developed very large agricultural crops in pea- nuts and tobacco, and also in the pro- . duction of broilers and vegetables and truck crops. GENERAL SUMMARY From 1890 to 1945, the number of acres in farms in the United States in- creased from 623 million to 1,141 mil- lion, an increase of more than 80 per eent in acres. During the same period, the number of acres in farms in Geor- ~ gia declined from 25 million to 23 mil- lion, but the value of farm lands, fences and buildings in the United States only, increased from 13 billion to 46 billion, or an increase in value of approximately. 300 per cent. During the same time, the value of farm lands, fenees and build- ings in Georgia increased from 152 mil- (Continued on Page Hight) ti PAGE TWO - ' postage. 4 print-sacks or large for 8 Baby Pink, on th OF MARKETS, 222 STATE Notices of farm produce of notice, not assume any responsibility notices.
