TOM UNDER fe : SS, 4 on ew NUMBER a Un nt with U ited States Department of ure, effective March 1, 1944, ap- ed by the St: te Department: of. Ag- ire the College of Agriculture, ersity of Georgia, Fedral- State work on butter, egos, cheese 2 utr 18 provided for the people In view | of the rapidly developing er dustry over the past few years, m 500,000, valued at $230,- 1935 aS 33 025 000 in 1938, val- at $29,108, 000, additional markets ing developed for Georgia broilers of the United States. Some of ding processors in the industry eady receiving orders from South rican and other foreign countries. Due to this development and to competition of other highly devel- producing | areas, this Department, peration with the Dairy and Poul- Inspection and Grading Division, . USDA, is providing Federal-State n poultry, eges and other cts under this Memorandum of t. [am in recipt of a eommun- from. the Dallas, Texas, office of A, which in part reads as follows: Beginning August 1, 1949 the ection and Grading Division, y and Poultry Branch of the od. This additional Service will enable people of other na- tions of the world to enjoy delicious Georgia chickens and should greatly ac- celerate this rapidly growing segment of our agricultural income. This service is also available to egg and dairy pro- duct handlers and distributors. The various military installations in Georgia purchase tremendous quanti- _ ties of these products from all parts of Claims for Damage For Spergon W. P. I am in receipt of letter from Farm- ers Mutual Exchange, Mr. G. P. Mc- Craine, Manager, at Adel, Georgia, -with regard to damages to seed pea- nuts treated with Spergon W. P. Spergon W. P. was not registered as a seed treatment and was not approved as a seed treatment, therefore, the sale of it as a seed treatment was a direct violation of the Insecticide Law. Because the Commissioner of Agri- culture has no authority under the law to persue these claims, as is the case with the Fertilizer Law, it will be nec- essary for farmers, shellers and dealers to bring their own claims in court if they desire to recover. After a conference between the Gov- ernor, the Attorney General, Mr. H. L, Wingate, President of the Georgia Farm Bureau Federation, and myself, the Attorney General took under ad- visement the question of whether or not the Law Deparment could represent farmers, shellers and dealers in these cases. _ The Attorney General tells me that _he cannot bring original action in these cases but that he and his assistants will be glad to assist in any way they can if local attorneys are employed to bring action, From this it is clear that unless the farmers, dealers or shellers institute some proceeding on their own initiative * that nothing will be done about this. As Commissioner of Agriculture I have done all in my power, under the present law, which is to cancel registra- tions of the United States Rubber Com- pany. fe TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture the country, all a2 which must be ac- companied by a certificate, or inspected on delivery. T am told that the 3rd Army, At- lanta, buys for all the Army installa~ tions in several states, and heretofore has depended on the Dallas Office for this grading and inspection service and is another major reason for establishing | the service in Atlanta, which will also serve Government Hospitals and other agencies, - a The records reveal that the first Memorandum of Agreement between the. U. S. Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department to make the Federal shipping point inspection service on fruits and vegetables, autho- more extensively available to the people of Georgia than would be feasible without the aid and rized by Congress, cooperation of the State, and to issue joint Federal-State certificates, became effective June 1934. This service has been continuous and is voluntary, ex- cept in the case of peaches which under the provisions of a Marketing Agree- ment approved by referendum of the growers it is mandatory that each con- tainer of fresh peaches moving out of teorgia must be properly graded and 7 inspected. This program has been highly. satisfactory, as there is no more dump- _ ing of green or inferior Georgia peach- es on the markets. Our peaches are de- manding the market price. Likewise the U. S. Department of Agriculture has, for a number of years, | provided Market News Service both for peaches and watermelons during the marketing season with headquarters at Macon and Cordele respectively. During the eurrent vear, the State Department has participated in this service, bearing 50 percent of the total expenses, which _ provides current Market News Service for all the peach and watermelon grow- ers of Georgia. The Department likewise has pro- vided other grading and inspection ser- vice which can be put into effect when needed under a Memorandum of Agree- ment with the U. 8. Department of Ag- riculture, effective June 1, 1946. This Memorandum provides for Inspection Service for processed fruits and vegeta- bles and is available to distributors and processors. If and when the processors of Georgia need this service. it can be provided, Hffeetive June 1, 1940, a Memoran- dum Agreement was approved provid- (Continued on Page Four) PAGE TWo on th GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Address all items for publication and al! requests to be put ailing list and for change of address to STATE BUREAU OF MERKETS, 222 STATE CAPITOU, Atlanta.
