If we figure 9c for the cost of gasoline in the first place, a 1/2 taxes, this makes a total of 16 1/2 cents. The consumer is now paying nearly twice as much as the cost of the gas, -plus the taxes. Gasoline has become an absolute necessity for a majority of the people in this country. Mavbe Mr. Bran- nan will propose to pay a part of the gasoline bill out of the National Treas- ury. Since we are using the taxpayers money to pay 100 percent for gasoline for Europeans, it does look like it would- nt be anv crazier to use the taxpavers money to pay half of the gasoline bill - for American citizens. Personally, I am opposed to subsidiz- ing anybody out of the Federal- Treas- ury, but some of these days we are go- ing to make up our minds which way. -we are going to travel. | The United States is highly motorized and agriculture is becoming more and more mechanized. Every day they tell us that machines are going to make it cheaper to produce on the farms. Every day they talk about farm prices must be reduced. Gasoline and other fuel oils are just as essential to modern day farm- - Ing as seed and fertilizer. There is no possible defense ss gasoline selling in der the Marshall Plan, ihe taxpayers of. cotton weighing 500 pounds each. The | NOTICE There is so much room for the farmer to be defrauded by the buy- ing of hybrid seed corn that it ha- been necessary to limit the sale of hybrid seed corn to that which has been certified and sealed. Farmers - should be careful not to buy corn unless it is in sealed bags and car- ries the necessary certification of contents. < REGULATION NO. 17 _ On and after August 1, 1949, no hybrid seed corn shall be sold in Georgia, except hybrid seed corn which has been certified by an offi- cidlly recognized seed_ certifying -agency. Each sack must be sealed and tagged, carrying evidence of such certification. The foregoing rules and_ regula- tions are hereby adopted and promul- gated under authority vested in and duly imposed upon the Commissioner of Agriculture in the Georgia Seed Laws and Acts of 1941 and 1943. July 7, 1949. TOM LINDER, _ Commissioner ge Agriculture this country. for export to Europe at 8 and 9e per gallon while the farmer must pay 28 and 30 cents to burn in his trae-_ tor, in, his truck and in other farm ore ment. i COTTON FOR COMMUNIST ~ According to the same official report j during the month of August, 1948, un- the United States purchased from An-- derson-Clayton Cotton Company and George H. McFadden & Bro. 73,072,042. pounds of cotton. There was other items of cotton from the same sellers for whieh no weight is given and for that reason, I am not using them in making this computation. ~ - This is equivalent to 146,144 bales of amount paid for this cotton was $27,- 198,203.00. This was an average price of 37.22 cents per pound (cotton sells better than gasoline). If it were neces sarv for the Government te pay more than 37 cents a pound to get some cotton to give away, it is hard to understand _ why they tell us every day cotton is a drug on the market and if it wasnt for _ Government supports, it wouldnt even ~ bring the 25 to 30 cents that it is bring- ing to the farmer. = Who do vou suppose this taxpayers cotton was given to? It was shipped to. | Shanghai, China. Practically all the eot- ton, so far as I have been able to find, was shipped to China. Right in front of the advancing Reds. Right where they couldnt help but get it. The newspapers | tell us that the Reds came into Shangha? with guns, ammunition and uniforme produced in American factories and.paid for with American money. When they got to Shanghai, they had a nice store of eotton waiting for them, also paid for by the taxpayers. = BUT WAIT These are just purchases for one month, August 1948. At that rate, in: twelve months, we would ship China 1,- 753,728 bales of cotton at a eost of $326,- 378,436.00, According to the records in Washington, our total exports of cot- ton for the year 1948 was $510,954,- 575.00 At the rate we were sending cat- ton to Shanghai that alone would ac- count for more than half our exports. Looks like it would have been a mighty good time for the Commodity Credit Corporation to unload a lot of that ecot- ton that it says it is stuek with for 30 cents and less.
