ieaetataae ANIMAS oe apace eT HY TOM UNDER @ oe ey COMMISSIONER VOLUME 32 Editorial By TOM LINDER For the past quarter of a century Georgia has been out- j@ standing in the production of i= peaches. Those who know very B little about the State and its @products remember the Geor- Bigia Peach which is found on @ practically every market in the 1 country and yields a substantial revenue to our State. __. The peach industry is well erganized and every bushel or carload that is shipped from the Bistate goes out in accordance Marketing Agreement, which provides that no peaches can be shipped out of Georgia that do not meet the requirements of a Federal inspection certificate. @ .~=EC(TThe: vegetabile industry is @ likewise many years old, but it was not until 1935 that the State took definite steps to provide ' marketing facilities. Under the } provisions of an Act of the Leg- islature, the Commissioner of Agriculture was authorized to 4 construct markets and the first State market was opened in At- @ lanta in February, 1936. Sales # that year amounted to $541,000. 0 This market grew and develop- om ed rapidly and the needs of State aid in the marketing of Geor- gia fresh fruit and vegetables became so apparent the pres- -fent Atlanta Farmers Market i Was opened May, 1941. vig 6Cfli(sdCns the meantime, other markets have been constructed at strategic locations in the State, and during the past year, @ eleven State markets were in 1 operation, through which $42,- 935,000 worth of fruits and veg- etables were sold. More than $31,000,000 was handled . through the Atlanta market. al From May, 1941, through i" December, 1948, sales through these markets have amounted oid 202,743,000. The Atlanta WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 1949 market, in particular, serves the nation, as farm products from forty-two states and five foreign countries were handled through that market in 1948. These figures show the vi- tal part our State markets are playing in the marketing of fruits and vegetables. The rec- ord reveals that in 1939, 17,679 carloads, or carlot equivalent, of fruits and vegetables were handled through the Atlanta market, and in 1948, 24,085 car- loads were handled. There has been a consistent increase since 1941, with the exception of 1942 and 1943, in the number of car- loads handled through the At- lanta market, and a decided in- crease in the dollar value of the products handled. For instance, the total sales for all State mar- kets in 1941 were $7,740,000, and in 1948, $42,939,000, or ap- proximately six times greater. NOTICE! HYBRID SEED CORN Hybrid Seed Corn, means the first generation seed of a cross pro- duced by controlling the pollination, and by combining two, three, or four inbred lines, or by combining one in- bred line or a single cross with an open polinated variety. When buying hybrid seed corn, it is important to get certified seed if possi- ble. If hybrid seed corn is not certified, be sure that the tag shows the variety and pedigree. For instance, Hybrid Ten- nessee 10 Corn grown from four inbred lines, the pedigfee would show (T14 x T18) x (T61 x T13) with the name and address of the producer. There is at times good hybred seed corn which, on account of being low in germination, cannot be certified. All certified corn must show a germina- tion of 80% or better, and corn grown for certification that shows 70% or better is permitted sold, but not cer- tified. Insist on hybrid seed corn that is adaptable to your locality, otherwise, you may lose a crop. Also, your county agent, vocational teacher or the Soil Conservation representative in your locality should be able to give you in- formation as to adaptability of differ- ent varieties, ; : eee S NUMBER 30 Fruits and Vegetables The question confronting the Commissioner of Agricul- ture as well as the people of Ge- orgia is: Will this volume of pro- .duce continue to increase and, if so, what additional facilities will be needed to meet the demands. The General Assembly is cognizant of that fact and I hope will continue to make provisions to take care of this need that is so vital to the future develop- ment of Georgia agriculture. It is interesting to note the varieties of fruits and vegeta- bles we produce in Georgia. Of the 6,048 carloads sold last year on the Atlanta market, 1,693 cars were watermelons, 543 cars of sweet potatoes, 512 cars of cabbage, and the other prod- ucts ranging from 363 cars of greens to 53 cars of peppers and peas; cantaloupes, corn, field peas, tomatoes, Lima _ beans, peaches, collards, squash, okra, potatoes, turnips, pears and ap- - ples, named in order of quantity marketed. There are a number of oth- er products that were market- ed in lesser quantities, from cus cumbers, 33 cars, to beets 1, in- cluding lettuce, egg plant grapes, mixed vegetables, on- ions, radishes, spinach, green peas and strawberries. Realizing that profitable farming depends, in its final an- alysis, on profitable marketing, all agricultural agencies, both Federal and State, are devoting considerable time to this prob- lem. Improved facilities are be- ing added, markets are under construction and others under consideration to perfect our marketing system, which has become an important factor in the marketing program of. the entire country.
