I do. not know what the general situation is, but all of it needs investigation. 1 am informed that the Hopewell Plant in Virginia last year manufac- tured 210,000 tons of whieh 155,000 went to industry and 55,000 to agri- eulture. It seems there has been a tre- mendous increase in demand for Nitro- r T under- stand also there is an increase in ship- ment of Nitrogen and other fertilizer to the middle west and west. I understand furthermore, that there has been a large decrease in imports of Nitrogen and also increase in export of Nitrogen due to rulings of the In- ternational Food Council. The entire question in my needs inquiring into. Since the United States Government has entered into an agreement for an International body to control foreign demands as well as domestic shipments of Nitrogen, it _ Seems imperative that the Government should aiso see to it that what Nitrogen remains, should be fairly distributed not only between agriculture and in-- dustry, but also between the several states. This eae is being written to each opinion * the welfare of the United Senator and Congressman from Geor- gia in order to bring it to each ones attention, as: I feel each and every one ~ will be vitally interested in it. I am also sending copies to Commissioners of Agriculture of the southeastern states so that they may call the matter to the attention of their Senators and Congressmen if they deem it advisable. With kindest personal regards, I am Yours very truly, TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture Down here in the Southeast, we are 4 especially dependent on Nitrogen for both crops and pastures. The taxpay- ers of this country have spent enormous amounts of money for the building of Nitrogen plants, both as war measures and.as long-term development of power - projects. Maybe it is out. 7. date to be for but I-eannot see the justifi- America, eation for turning our internal eeosn- omy over to a bunch.of foreigners. It seems to me that we should determine for ourselves how much Nitrogen to export and not turn the entire matter over to people who have no interest in States. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture The following letter from John O. Knutson Company, of Sioux City, Iowa, to Kiplinger Washington Agency is self-explanatory: As brought out in this letter, high prices means high prices for everybody and low prices means low prices for everybody. Which would you rather have? Think it over between now and November. JOHN O. KNUTSON CO. 439 Badgerow Bldg. Sioux City, Iowa Sioux City, Towa August 26, 1948 Kiplinger Washington Agency Washington 6, D. C. Gentlemen: Your letter No. 516 was handed the writ- er by Mr. Grindberg, President of Tolerton & Warfield Co., one of your subscribers. As long as you persist in referring to farm supports as a policy benefitting only the farmer, and do not recognize that the 90% Loan privilege to farmers is to as- sure Parity for Agriculture in protection of our economy, your information can not help but be misleading. Lower flexible price supports merely means lower prices all around, including wages, and a Reduced National Income in direct proportion to the percentage of Farm Income below Parity. Reduce Parity pro- Prices. Prices-Which We y Will America Go? tection 10% and we reduce National In- come 20 Billions. Reduce Parity protection 20% and we lose 40 Billions of National Income. in other words, all labor, ail com- merce, all industry must share in whatever lower price results from below Parity prices for Agriculture. Public Resentment is due to misinform- ation by the headliners. It is up to agencies like yours to throw your influence in the direction of stability. Either we must all share the poverty which will follow the reduced income, or swe may all share the prosperity which will follow our ever-ex- - panding economy protected by full Parity for Agriculture and other-new wealth, in cluding -Mining. Your guess that Parity supports this year might cost.as much as 3% Billions looks Scarey, but should say thatif it costs 3144 Billions to support our economy, it will be cheap insurance against the terrific impact of deflation, depression, unemployment and chaos. Thats what Stalin is hoping for, and if your ideas prevail, thats what he will get, and then goodbye to Americas hope for the World. Please read our bulletin herewith, and THINK. Yours truly, JOHN O. KNUTSON CO. P. S. There was never a time in the U.S.A, when the average American can buy as much for 1 hours work as NOW. That. is what you should tell em!
