TOM LINDER = COMMISSIONER VouUME 32 WEDNESDAY, MARCH 23, 1949 _NUMBER aa By: Thomas Thomas E. Wa Watson 2 ben doing was hard; and now that the room grew warm and the long.task was a T fell asleep. ; No one in the house had been awake but me, while I had for many hours gone er the dreary record of the poor, the tient poor, the suffering poorGods unprovided poor. The hours had stolen like slippered monks, and it was far o the night when the heaviness fell on my eyes, and I was asleep. Many a whirling fiction passed rough my heated fancy. before there was order in my Dream, but after _ A world unfolded, spreading out, like 1 map. Every grade and class and con- lition of human life was before-me at oncewith no mist before my eyes and nO distance to confuse the outline. What J saw was this: A magnificient world of land and sea; of river and lake Wand forest and fertile field; mountains #seamed with hidden wealth; valleys rich Vwith grain. : 1} To this world its Maker had given the Jname of A home for the human fam- 7 But the ees familv had grown very large. Its foot-prints were thick upon every stretch of solid ground, and Fits vessels moved upon all the waters of Wall the seas. But the earth was no longer a family- home, and men were no longer brothers. With furious enmity, they hated each other. They worshipped God, but none of them regarded His law. They cried Peace, and loosed the war dogs. They rose from prayer, and went to rifle- practice. Schools flourishedso did ignorance. Charities flourishedand paupers died in the streets. I wondered what it all meant. _ There was land enough for all. They said that God had made it for all. But the few had taken possession of mighty i} estates, and*many had no homes. There "was food enough for all: but a few had i }seized it, and one-third of the people had not enough to eat. pak ily to. discover how the human I found it was any ae of work. AS - IS AND AS IT MAY a was very tired, for the work I had Churches flourishedso did crime. a Some ta to produce food for the world. Some labored:to produce cloth- ing. Some labored'to make houses, oth- ers to make deadly weapons. Some did no manual work at all, but were mental laborers, only. Some labored to teach the people the law of God; others to ex- pound and enforce the laws which men had made for themselves. Others still labored<(or-pretended to labor) to make just laws}. by which Gods will should be done inthe affairs of tien: In my dream TI saw ce ai-most singular thingthose whose work was most important to the, world were paid=-. less for their labor than anybody else. Those who merely amused the world got higher wages than those who fed and clothed it. Those who played and danced got higher pay than the man who built the house they plavedin and danced in. Those who labored to ammpse the idle, drew enormous salaries and were the pets of the powerful; those who kept the powerful clothed and fed, often lacked food and clothing for themselves. * In mv dream the cause of this cruel state of things became clear. Those who had made the law had so cunningly made it that the strong man was master of the weak. The strong man became the ruler, and out of the weak mans own produce gave him whatever he chose. This made the strong man stronger, and the weak man weaker. T thought I heard a great heartbreak- Ing ery go up from those poor producers of wealth, but their Task Masters heard it notso deaf are they who will not hear. T thought that. now and then these workers and producers grew furious against their oppressors and rose up in revolt. But they were put down again some shot and some imprisoned. IT thought that now and then Leaders rose up among those suffering people and promised to go to the Great House of Council, where the Laws were made. and to change these bad laws into good ones. But, either such Leaders were too few, or the strong men would take those leaders aside into some safe and secret place and by unknown charms and per- suasions entice those leaders into for- getfulness of the miseries of the People. So passed the first part of my dream ae Dream of Todayof the world as It is. Like a vanishing landscape, I saw the preat Palaces of the Rich and t while Sie G. wretched huts of the poor; the fine raiment of the one and the rags of tha other; the well-spread tables of the ona and the cold hearth and empty dish of the other.. The factories went whirling into spacebut through the windows I could see the pale, thin features of the children who toiled there. The mina opened one brief moment, and I could see the pitiful serf of the Coal King. The garret sped by, and it made the tears come, to see the shivering needle-wonr an sewing there. The streets swam by, filled with their squalor, their hunger, their ceaseless vice and crime and suf- Seay feritte--and Christianity. Spoken these: : streets throweh the mouth of the Police man, and what she said to the raseed outcast was, Move on, what she said to the starving child was, Move on. And it strangely got into my Dream, somehow, that the eause of all the sor- row was that the Order of the world was a mistakea dreadful misunderstand- The unnatural had become the rule. A feverish haste had taken pos- session of mankind: and the race was madly run for, things which men really did not need. One man rushed heeause another rushed, eheated hecause others cheated, hoarded heeause others hoard- ed,was cruel beeause he thought the same measure would be meted out to him, were situations reversed. e * * % But the troubled nightmare: passed, and I fell into the Dream of Tomorrow a gorgeous Dream, a Snpirit-lifting Dream,of the world as it may be. I seemed to look upon the same world but it was bathed in light, and filled with harmony. The great rush and worry had suised away. The fever and the pain were gone. The vast machinery of vrodue- tion moved like stars. never resting, but never hastine.) There was room for all, and food for all. The arth was dedicated anew as a Home for Gods Childrenits product their food. Re- ligion burst out from the cold churehes, and abode in the lives of menthat high Religion which loves merey, does good and seeks the Right. Law was no longer frittered away among wrangling advocates and stupid Judges. She took her broad principles into the walks of life, and did justice, he- tween man and man. The Rulers of the People no longer scorned them, nor defrauded them with cunning laws and sharp practices. The People themselves now ruled, and the _ worker was no longer a dependent. Spe- cial Privilege had been slain and Op- portunity was free for all. There were no. outeastsfor they all had homes. There were no beggars, for there was work and fair wages for all. None had much more than they needed; none had much less. There was little crime, for its cause had been removed. There was brotherhood among men, for the motive for rivalry and hatred gad heen taken away. Wars had ceased. The killing of men had heeome horrible, whether singly or bv thousands. A Murderer was detest- ed. whether he slew with a kinfe or a. sword, with a pistol or with a cannon. The hum of Peaceful industry was in the air. The melody of innocent laugh- ter was in the streets.
