erat 2. ea ee 1 4 a : a 4s TOM LINDER ee COMMISSIONER fhe Poultry Industr Editorial By TOM LINDER Since the advent of the Mexi- in Boll Weevil into Georgia bout 1916, many changes have | een made in agriculture. Dur- i g this period approximately 50 percent of the total acreage de- ted to crops was planted in cotton. The records show that in 1911, Georgia farmers plant- ed 4,958,000 acres which pro- duced 2,794,000 bales. In 1914 5, 157, 000 acres were planted in cotton, producing 2,723,000 bales. The average acreage planted during the 1911-1915 period was 4,825,000 which yielded an average of 2,298,000 bales that produced an average come of $140,430,000. Prior to 1916, the damage from boll ae as expressed in percentage of full yield was Zero. In 1916 the boll weevil damage was 3 per cent; in 1921, 45 per cent; in 1922, 44 per cent; and in 1923, 37 per cent. This necessarily farmers to look to other sources for money crops. The records reveal that the last 4,000,000 _| acre crop of cotton was einctad | in 1920. Not over 3,000,000 acres | has been planted since 1931, and not over 2,000,000 acres has been planted since 1938. It is striking to note that in <1 1947 Georgia farmers harvest- id ed only 1,298,000 acres which yielded a aah income of $126,- 340,000. Due to this tremendous loss in | Georgias major agricultural | | cash crop during the period im- ji mediately following 1916, the farmers began to change their old methods of farming and de- : | vete more time and attention | to other money crops. F ollowing |this period, a tremendous hog lindustry sprang up in various ||eommunities in Geuthwest Ge- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9, 1949 NUMBER 23 forced Georgia orgia which provided additional cash income and has resulted in many large packing plants be- ing erected in those sections. Other phases of livestock began to develop in rapid succession throughout the state. Much em- phasis was given to the poultry industry which in later years has, according to official re- _ cords, developed into one of our major industries, particularly in the northern part of the state. The records reveal that the farmers of Georgia produced 500,000 broilers in 1935 that yielded an income of $230,000. By 1940, the broiler industry had increased to 31, million that yielded an income of $1,680,- 000. It was in the early forties that this industry began to grow by leaps and bounds. The total cash income to Georgia farm- ers in 1940 from poultry and eggs, including broilers, was $8,701,000. In 1947, this income had increased to $47,670.000. In 1945, Georgia produced 291, million broilers which yielded an income of $24,450,000. It was thought by many, after the cessation of hostilities, this industry which had grown so rapidly during the war period, would probably drop off consid- erably due to the loss of govern- ment contracts. (Such is not the case, as the most recent figures available show that for the year . 1947, we produced 28,717,000 broilers which yielded an in- come of $24,141,000.) This is largely due to the fact that, dur- ing this rapid expansion period, processing and other facilities of the most modern types were built in the main broiler section, conducive to the continuation of a great industry in concentrated areas, It is generally recognized that Georgia is the second broiler- producing state in the union. Other phases of our poultry in- dustry have developed in a pro- portionate degree. During this period of great expansion, com- mercial hatcheries were built throughout many sections of the State and the records reveal that for the period of 1940-44, these. commercial hatcheries produced an averageof 19!/, mil- lion baby chicks. In 1946, they stepped up production to 36%4 million baby. chicks, and in 1947, 45 and one fourth million baby chicks. We have compiled the infor- mation on our broiler industry for each year since 1934, which shows a tremendous increase over the preceding one, with the exception of 1946, when there was a small slump, but was picked up in 1947. There- fore, we have reason to be- lieve that this industry will at least hold its own, or probably - increase in the years to come, as it is now established,on a sound basis, with sufficient processing and other facilities available to take care of the industry. This is indicative of a substantial in- dustry which is making its con- tribution to our overall farm in- come. The Farm Income Report, re- leased by BAE Crop Reporting System at Athens for the year 1947, shows that livestock and livestock products contributed $157,176,000, or 30.1 per cent of our total cash farm income of $521,942,000. It is a long step from a total cash income to Ge- orgia farmers, including eggs, broilers and other chickens of $8,701,000 in 1940 to $47,670,000 (Continued On Page Eight) PAGE TWLU MARKET BULLETIN un th of notice Sa Under Legislative. This Department has made its contribution to the expansion of this great industry in the control of poultry diseases which is of paramount importance. Proba-. bly one of the greatest factors in the improvement of breeding stock with respect to disease control was the enactment, in 1946, of the Georgia Poultry Law. This law resulted in the al- most united support of the poul- try indusiry with the aid and support of this Department. Realizing that this industry is going to be permanent and not of the mushroom type that sprang up curing the war peri- od, special emphasis has been given to the control of major in- fectious and contagious dis- eases, particularly in our heav- ily populated broiler areas. We are working very closely with the State College of Agri- culture, the Extension Service and other Agricultural agencies in the control of these dis- FARM HELP WANTED FARM HELP WANTED oultry Indus eases, particularly pullorum. Short courses for training agents in testing work have been given and today there are seventy-five agents actively en- gaged in poultry work on a fee basis at no expense to the State. These agents have demonstrat- ed that they are qualified to do the job of flock selecting and pullorum testing. They are sup- ervised by this Department and no doubt this program has con- tributed materially to the rapid growth of the poultry improve- ment plan. Our records show that flock owners participating in this pro- gram represent about nine and one fourth million of the approx- imately 10,000,000 hatching eggs produced in the State. Our records reveal that for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1948, the per cent of reactors was .109, which is approximate- ly one-fifth of the percentage for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1947. This disease control program is not confined to poultry flocks FARM HELP WANTED POSITIONS WANTED Wednesday, F supplying hatching eggs in orgia, but any shipper of hatch ing eggs into Georgia has meet the same requirements a our own flock owners. Pullor disease is not the only disease major importance as conside able attention is being given t all our common diseases such a: Newcastle, Coccidiossis amt others. = It is our hope that this m important work in connecti with the poultry industry can k continued even on a larger sca to the point where the poult men of Georgia can feel rea ably sure that poultry and poul try products can be produced i this State with a minimum los from infectious and contagiou diseases. We.are proud of thi industry which is-making a suk stantial contribution to the ove all cash farm income of ou State, and shall exert every fort possible to enable it to c tinue to develop and our farn ers prosper. ce TOM LINDER Commissioner Of Agricultu POSITIONS WANTED Want good man for 2H crop, tivation.
