WERNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1948 NUMBER 3 ae By TOM LINDER | this shall be a sign cnt you3 shall find the babe wrapped in swad- g clothes, lying in a manger. suddenly there was with the angel aultitude of the heavenly host prais- God, and saying, lory to God in the highest and on 1 peace, good will toward men. ad it came to pass, as the angels were @ away from them into heaven, the pherds said one to another, Let us go even unto Bethlehem, and see _Lord hath made known untd us. uke 2:12,13,14,15 modern days as writers and lead- Stray farther and farther away the teaching of scripture, we nm hear the term, To men of good 9) ce idea, of course, being to create belief in the minds of the people ; Christ was proclaimed by the an- to men of good will. this erroneous assumption, we see e organized churches and many Spaper editors trying to lay the SHRISTMAS thing which is come to pass, which | .time approaches for the foundation for peace on earth among the nations. What the angels actually said, ac- cording to the Seripture, was: Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:14 The angels: were telling men that the infant Christ was given as a token of the good will of God toward men. It was never intended that the com- ing of Christ should bring peace among men on earth. A casual reading of Matthew 10:34 shows clearly that Christ did not come to bring peace. Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. Matthew 10:34 Christ knew that His coming to earth and His life and death would be to ac- centuate the struggle between the forces of Satan and the forces of God on earth, The Scriptures teach us that as the return of Christ to earth, the struggle between men will become more and more orilet and bloody. It is true that the Scriptures teach after His return there will be a millen- nium during which there will be peace on earth and during which time And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people; and they ~ shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: na- tion shall not lift up sword against na tion, See? shali tmey learn war any more. Isaiah 2: 4, COMING OF CHRIST And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Au- gustus, that all the world should be taxed.Luke 2.1. In the Greek, the word ovikoumene is used meaning the inhabited earth. Under the order of the Romay Emperor, it meant that all of the world under Do- minion of the Roman Empire should be taxed. It meant that the Gentile world power of Rome was laying a tax not only on Gentile nations, but on all (Continued on Page Hight) As the Spirit of Christmas unfolds itself over the coun- | _tryside, we add our greetings and best wishes of the season. A Christmas of joy and contentment; of peace, good cheer and happiness---that is our wish for you and eee this joyous Yuletide season. ---that good will toward men throughout the world will be a heartening reality during the coming year---and that you, our friends, will have the health and happiness you deserve. j : : ; Com Linder Commissioner of Agriculture SS NS i Re gg ts eh Na Ny Us PAGE TWO ARKE | GEORGIA MAR yn th NATIONAL D =< _ASS a Address all items for publication ano al: requests to be put yailing list and for change of adcress co STATE BUREAU OF MARKETS. 222 STATE CAPITC . Easiest Bulbs to Groy House, Flower in Wat Easiest flowers for the amateur to grow in the house this winter are bulbs-which need only water to enable them to flower. Botanists say a-bub is a storehouse contain- ing a new plant, plus food and energy sufficient to earry it to maturity. Warmth, water and light} r start up growth, but this must not be too rapid. Paper white narcissi, its yellow cousin narcissus soliel dor, and top size hyacinths are the varieties most commonly grown in water without~ soil; but crocuses, and grape hyacinths can be grown in bowls containing bulb fibre, and lily of the valley pips will flower in bowls with wet sphagnum moss packed about their roots. ~ Failure is usually due-to fast growth stimulated by high temper- atures, which result in scanty roots, spindly top growth, and no flowers -at all, or very poor ones.. Whether grown in gravel and water, bulb fibre, or soil, contain- ers several inches deep should be used, so there is plenty of room for roots. Heats Set the bulbs close together, but do not let them touch. There should be two inches of gravel, soil or| fibre below them, and water should be kept only high enough to touch the base of the bulbs. Root formation prcedes top growth and should take four weeks. A temperature below 60 degrees is essential, and it may be kept be- Jow 50. Roots develop best in the dark, but with these. bulbs a sub- dued light is permissible. When the roots are fully developed, top growth will begin, and at this stage the bulbs can be given more light though it is well to keep them out _ of direct sun until flower stalks be- _ gin to develop. Then give them all the light possible. Best flowers will result if a tem- perature of 65 degrees is never ex- ceeded. Be careful to keep the plants away from steam pipes and radiators, or living rooms heated above 70 degrees. They should be ' near windows where there is light Perennial Vegetables - -Perennial vegetables including asparagus, rhubarb and _ hardy , onions are better planted this fall MISCELLANEOUS _, WANTED APPLES: Want 10 lbs. dried apples. | than next spring, Asparagus and rhubarb will be ready to harvest a full year sooner while the onions will produce a harvest next spring. For the asparagus bed, roots should be obtained and placed in a location which need not be dis- turbed during the life of the garden, since a good asparagus bed will last several decades. Deep, | rich soil is required and the plants - should be given ample room, with three feet each way between hills. Dig a hole a foot deep, spread the roots out and set the crown of the plant six inches below the surface. Rhubarb is another long lived plant. Six plants will suffice for the average family and they should be} placed where they will not be dis- turbed, perhaps near the asparagus | in a garden screen or border. The hardiest winter onion is the | red perennial, sometimes called the Egyptian. This is one of the onions which instead of bearing seeds, .produces at the top of the seed stalk a bunch of onion sets. These sets should be obtained and planted this fall, a foot apart in the row,.in rows two feet apart; though, few families will need more than one row. This onion never produces a round bulb, but in the spring as soon as the ground thaws, it begins to grow stalks like green onions. Part of each clump may be pulled up and used, and with this annual thinning, and ordinary cul- tivation, the plants will live in- definitely. The flavor of the stalks is mild in the early spring, but becomes stronger later. Where winters are mild, some of!
