"WEDNESDAY. JANUARY 14, 1948. the housewife pay for m on the breakfast table in n home today. 60 PER BUSHEL ts package of corn flakes pound, Sixteen times ten housewife pays $1.60 for At $1.60 hel of corn; suppose | the President prices; suppose he reduces corn from $2.50 qo S105: $89.60 that the housewife for corn: flakes? oO and newspaper advertising es cost more money than the ives for all the corn made flakes. The cardboard car- hich the corn flakes are pack- re money than the farmers all the corn made into corn han the farmer receives ST OF LIVING eo 1 Administration ines a oS . ae if the ived a dollar a bushel for | sewife paid $2.00.a bushel | ~ four shirts cost $15.80. Take corn flakes a very | cotton used in the manufacture of these If you figure the two pounds mee of corn. There are - ee are 56 ee Reeves $2.50 . et do you suppose that Hoc. ie labels on the cartons cost Bach .and every man the farmer joceied. foe. the corn that . went Into the corn flakes. - TOMATOES ne an ordinary can of tomatoes. ~The can in which che tomatoes are pack- ed cost several times as much as the : farmer receives for the tomatoes. The cost in the operation of canning the to- matoes was more than the farmer re- te ceives for the. tomatoes. Transportation on long hauls amounted to more than the farmer received for the tomatoes. Tf the. farmer produced the tomatoes for nothing, it would haye no appreci-_ able effect on the price ue a can of to- matoes. \ COTTON In Washington, a few weeks ago, to testify before a committee, I purchased four white shirts at $3. 95 each. The The amount of ae four shirts was less than two pounds. at 39 cents, that would be 70 cents. If the farmer had received nothing for the cotton and the consumer had received the full benefit, the four shirts would cost $15.10. If the price of cotton was - reduced 50. per cent, it could not pos- sibly reduce the cost of the shirt more - than 2 per cent. Even in unprocessed foods, prices paid by consumers much higher generally thai prices re- ceived by farmers that there is no rea- sonable relationship. What has been said with regard to corn, tomatoes and cotton is true in varying degrees of all farm crops, and yet we have the sorry spectacle of a. President of the United States and a great many other people seeking to re- duce the farmers prices on the pre- text that it will reduce jiving cost to city dwellers. SEVEN TO ONE RATIO The existence of a natural law, under whose operation National Income is de- vendent upon the income of the pro- - ducers of raw material, is so well es- ~ tablished that the officials. in Washing- poe are bound to know about it. The desire to reduce farm prices does ef not. come from real. expectation of re- ~ ducing the cost. of living. in the cities are SO- The. Admin- >|. Wats the. amnerican . farmer. abhors and. detests subsidies from the government. The Administra- | tion also knows : farmer will not go along with the false that the American f ideas of a controlled economy excep when the farmer is dependent on sub- sidies from the government. like to reduce farm prices is to make the farmer dependent on government sub- sidies and thereby bring [ae under po-. litical control. PSYCHOLOGY OF THE MAR- SHALL PLAN When Lee surrendered at Appomat- tox, the people of the South were given no helping hand from any quarter. Af-_ ter the death of Abraham Lincoln, un- der the guiding hand of Thad Stevens and other notorious sons of Satan, the white people of the South were foreed to drink the dregs of humiliation De- yond anything in the annals of history, Did the people of the South become Communist? No. The trials and trib- ulations which they endured tempered a race of steel, and today the hope of this nation rests in the men and women who are the descendants of the Con- federacy. Today, the people of Europe, who are worthwhile, will overcome Communism only to the extent of their will to do so, Whatever help we give them must be in the spirit of a crust and glass of wa- ter in the name of the lowly Nazarene, otherwise the help that we give will do more harm than good. When we go to the people of Europe with the proposition that we are ship- ping. billions of dollars to keep them from being Communist, is it not evident that the reaction in their minds is that they are doing us a great favor by not being Communist ? They will feel that Russia on the one hand and the United States on the oth- er are out to buy and hire them. They, will feel that they have done a great. favor to that country from whom they, receive most. The minute that sueh free offers of billions is withdrawn, they will feel that we have done them a great injustice; that we are stingy, drivers of a hard bargain and demand- ers of the pound of flesh. 2 TOM LINDER Commissioner: of Agriculture NUMBER 18. 1s The real. reason that the Administration would PAGE TWO dvr th Ss; ant STARR.
