WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1947 7 COMM ISSION ER NUMBER 10 ir amma eonvention in of fhe are ee them look ee from the rent of Agriculture and s Department of State, to several speeches numbers of aueor, _to American consumers on an average, 60 cents umers dollar to pay 1 tion and. ett em nt ; that, during the vhen om was in effect, it erson replied, Yes; correctly in saying that ae it was costing 50 -consumers dollar on pay the cost of distribu- ting. The answer to this MISSIONERS" M ETING United he other was the fallacy the Secretary if I had ich broader mareins and profits for handling farm produce than existed under the natural operation of the law of supply and demand. From the above, I do not see how anvy- one can fail to understand the fact that 10 cents out of every dollar a by consumers was wasted. It is also apparent that a return to : OPA or any other form of price con- trol must either take 10 cents out of the farmers 50 cents 0 or must add 10 cents to the consumers dollar, or do a part of both. Tf the farmer is now getting 50 cents, he would have to aceept 40 cents or else the consumer, who is now paying $1.00, would be forced to pay $1.10. Taking it either way you likeneither the pro- ee nor the cosumers ean be benefit- te If an OPA is na to the ecarry- ing out of the Marshall Plan, then the OPA feature alone will cost the Ameri- can people approximately 6 billion dol- lars per year, to say nothing of the cost of the Marshall Plan itself. Is this worth thinking about? THE MARSHALL PLAN On Monday, November 10, I had a lone conservation with a noted news- - paper editor, who stated to me and sev- eral others, that the nations to be favor- ed under the Marshall Plan now had approximately 35 billion dollars worth of securities in this country and gold in their own countries. This is more than the present proposal to be spent for the entire Marshall Plan. I noticed a news item from Washing- ton to the effect that France alone hae 2 billion dollars in gold in France and 3 billion dollars worth of securities in the United States. This 5 Dillion of gold and securities Hleiene to Frenchmen is almost twice as much as the Mashall Plan proposes _ te give to France. On Wednesday, November 12th, a representative of the State Department which is handling all foreign affairs, al- so addressed our group at a luncheon. After the address I asked the eentle- man from the State Department about the newspaper editors statement. He would neither affirm nor deny the truth of the statement. He did not give any direct: reply. He did say that people had He living in those various countries wealth here in the United States. ealled on the government of the U nited also stated that those governments had - _ ticing | States to supply information so that the European governments might get pos- session and control of property of their subjects held in the United States, He stated that our government had so far declined to do this. He gave as the rea- son that we did not want to encourags communism by assisting European govy- ernments to get control of money and property of their subjects here in the United States. Personally I see no difference in prin- ciple in European governments taking the property of their own subjects to finance their nation and our government taking possession of property belong- ing to American citizens to finance our own government. When our government goes out by, taxation and takes property from Amer- icans to give to Europeans, I think this is the worst kind of communism. Every thinking person must know that it is not communism which the na- tional administration fears. Communism today is the same that communism was when they were play- ing the Russian National Anthem in the halls of Washington. The administra- tion did not fear communism then, Neither did they fear Russia because they imagined that Russia was weak. The national administration does not fear communism today because most all communistic principles are adyocated and practiced by the national admin- istration in Washington. The national administration fears Russia in the postwar world because | they have been disillusioned as to the strength of Russia. All this talk in Washington about fighting Communism is bunk. We are not fighting Communism. We are prac- Communism. We are fighting Russia because we have become afraid of Russia. This is the truth unvarnish- ed. Let us honestly face the facts. What could possibly raise the pres- tige of Russia in European minds more rapidly than to see the United States pouring her food and money into Eu- rope because we are afraid of Russia, THE DESTITUTE OF EARTH The destitute of earth must be fed by, increased food production. The desti- tute of earth must be clothed by in- creased production of clothing. The American people are willing to do what they can to alleviate suffering in every, - (Continued on Page Four), PAGE TWO Sa _NATIO [GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN on th __ ailing list and fer change of address to STATE BUREAU OF MARKETS, 222 STATE CAPITO., Atianta.
