Congress and the President are just as helpless to avoid the payment of this levy of natural law as is the individual - citizen. ' ee If the government inflates money and eredits and increase * prices, _ wages, _salaries and profits, this will to all practical purposes reduce the public debt by making dollars cheap. If money and credits are. in- flatd and the dollar made still cheap- er, then the price of everything that we buy must go up in the same ratio. Af- ter receiving a raise in wage, salary and profits the people would not be able to buy any more of the things that make their standara of living than they were before. On the other hand, all of their - Savings, bonds, insurance, pensions and other intangibles would have In other words, a radical. inflation of money and credits would simply amount to a roundabout method of repudiation -in whole or in part of all public and pri- vate debts. If, instead of inflation, the govern- ment pursues its present policy of de- flation, lets see what will happen. If eotton and corn and wheat and other ~ agricultural prices go down, then by _ this same immutable law of nature, wages, salaries and profits will also ) down. There is nothing that Congress and the President ean do to prevent this. The national debt, other public debts and private debts will steadily mount to more and more and moremeasured in terms of bales of cotton, bushels of wheat, hours of labor, months of school teaching and years of profits. There are always _ the United Statesof America, 4 potatoes, less meat, less eggs, less bread, less vegetables in, order to pay for the hospital billsjust so that nxtion must make up its mind that for a pe- riod of years it must have le8s food, less clothes and less houses. This is the cold, hard, unvarnished truth. Unpleas- ant? Yes. But true, nevertheless, Those who come along and offer ideas which they claim to be remedizs and panaceas for this unpleasant truth are simply deceiving the public and in many cases are deceiving themselves. They might as well try to find.a way to repeal _ the law of gravity, or prevent the sun from rising in the east. They are trying to do something fhat cant be done. There is always room for equalization of different individuals and different some Who get more than an equal division. There are always some who get less than an equal division. So far as the overall picture is concerned, the people as a whole will get less for a numbew of years to pay for the food and clothes, the guns and the planes and ships and the blood and the tears and the sweat that have been expendd in the war; and much of it before the war. This same law holds true as to the goods, the clothes, the medicine that we Ship to foreign countries now. Unier- stand, I am not saying that we should not help them. I think we should help them, insofar as we reasonably can. L think very strongly that it is immoral and wicked for our government, news- papers and radios to make the people be- lieve that they do not have to pay with a lower standard of living for the things that we ship to the other countries. That little farm family who just had enough corn, potatoes, milk and eggs for their own use no doubt would have unselfishly divided with their neigh- bors who were in need. However, when they divided with their neighbors they themselves would of necessity have less for their own use. The same is true of bh ssa fine spirit for us to be willing to divide what we have with those who are in need. Dividing with them, however, in- volves the spirit of sacrifice. We must sacrifice from our own use and enjoy- ment just as much as we give to other countries. This is true whether we are a little farm family or whether we are (Continued on Page Four) GEORGIA MARKET BULLETIN Ad@ress all items for publication and all requests to be put on the mailing list and for change of address to STATE BUREAU OF MARKBTS, 222 STATE CAPITO, Atlanta.
