Fifty cents would be a cheap price for this years crop, and you can buy it on the New York Exchange for 27 1-2 cents. Yours very truly, R. Pp. BRIGHTWELL, Manager _ Maxeys Trading Company. Mr. Brightwell is mistaken > however i in saying that you can buy this years cotton on the New York Cotton Exchange at 27 1-2 cents per pound. Cotton _ is not bought and sold on the - Futures Market. Horace ~ MARKET BULLETIN Last Killing Frost Sets HOOK TO HOLD SASH A garden task which can be per- ed in winter is the consiruc- om of a cold frame. Every gar- 2n should have one: in every enth of the year there is impor- rvice which it can render. me form cold frames have ised by gardeners for centu- 28; originally they were pits open the sun in which plants were red from cold wind. Since ass has been available, to keep it cold air but let in the suns . cold frames have become ard glazed sash are difficult this year; but various glass @S are available which can. tched on light frames and e a cold frame is so easy, who can wield a saw and can do it. It is usually by 6 feet, or some multiple x the reason that standard sash are of these dimen- er) may be any size you fit old windows, or frames STANDARD SIZE COLD FRAME SASH IS 3X6 FEET, DOUBLE GLAZED. of any convenient size. The frame should be construct- ed of heavy boards, of: cypress, white pine or some wood which re- sists rot. Dig a hole in the ground slightly larger than the size of the frame. It should be at least a foot deep. Into this hole put the frame you have built so that 6 inches of it is beneath the surface and the remainder above. This will insure. that no drafts enter from beneath. Construct the frame so that the front is 6 inches above the surface, }and the rear, 12 inches. It must slant toward the south, where the winter sun shines. It is well. to hinge the sash at the top of the frame, so it can be, easily opened for transplanting purposes and air- ing. : = A-sunny spot in the garden, pro- tected as much as possible from the full force of winds-and driving rain, is the best situation for the cold frame. It may be too cold now to dig in the garden, but the sash may be procured and the lum- ber frame made, so that wnen the first. warm days arrive you: are ready for serious gardening. When You Can rienced gardeners learn om feeling the soil. Most Of all. the conditions that sted by getting your hands is the moisture content. ng, cultivating, and seed which is neither too wet dry is best. Wet-soil should worked, and heavy soil dry can be as hard as a brick; ame soil with the right loisture may be as easy _@ sandy loam. oil is spaded, it usually d clods which may hold . season to do harm in ays. Seed should not be ants set out, in wet soil. not even walk on it, Make a Mudpie From Your Garden Soil, It Is too Wet to Spade. When Slightly Moist Soil Crumbles Easily in Your Hand, ~ It Is Time to Spade, The most reliable test is a simple onecall it the mud-pie test. Pick up a handful of goil and pat it be- tween your palms as you.used to do in childhood; if it holds together and makes a nice mud-pie, then it is too wet. There is a point between the two extremes of too wet, and too dry when a handful of soil, patted be- tween the palms, will crumble. It is not dry, but slightly moist, yet not wet enough to hold together in a mud-pie. At this point, even clay can be spaded easily, and will break up without forming clods. When the test indicates that this favor- able condition prevails, do not de- lay, otherwise the soil may dry out unduly, and compel you to wait for heavy rains to restore the right de- gree of moist: 4 MAY a3 y Los anotles JAN 27, Key Date for Gardening Y sep oc cHtyENMe =a { 5 aio veal . AY 10 parecer} Uprciik race VSUK1 Two key dates which govern gar- den operations in the spring are: The date when all deep frost is out, and the soil becomes dry enough to spade; and the date after which tender plants are reasonably safe from frost. Hardy plants, which are those that stand light frosts without in- jury, can be sown as soon as the ground can be worked; and this date is dependent more often upon rainfall than upon temperature. Tender plants cannot be sown or set out, until -danger of frost is over; and if they are started in- doors, or in a hot-bed or cold frame, the time to start them is from six to eight weeks before the frost-proof date. 7 Inquiry among gardeners in your locality will establish the date which is. generally accepted as frost-proof, , The map which aceom- panies this article was prepared from United States Department of Agriculture weather reports, to show the average date of the last killing frost of spring in various cities, This average dat is not a frost- roof date, because just as there is *? avewage man, there is no aver- age weather. While in the vicinity of Chicago, for example, the aver- Average Date of Last Killing Frost for Principal Cities. From U. 8. Department of Agriculture Weather Reports. age date of the last frost over 2 period of years is May 1, in. many of those years killing frosts oc- curred much later. , The latst frost on record any- where is likely to be thirty days lat- er than the average. There is always some risk in gardening, and it can- not be avoided. So gardeners must determine on a date somewhere in between the average date of the last frost, as given on the map, and the latest recorded frost, about thir- ty days later. Inquiry in-your locality will prob- ably disclose that practice has de- termined the reasonably safe date for setting out tender plants. In Chicago it is May 15, splitting the difference between the average date and the latest recorded date. If you have any trouble figuring it out for your own locality, consult the nearest. weather bureau, and your gardening friends, Hardy seeds may be sown out- doors with safety thirty days before the average last frost date, provid- ed the frost is out of the ground, and it is dry enough to work. But never work wet-soil, no matter how eager you are to get your Victory garden started. Nothing can be gained in that way; it is sure to mean loss in. the end. More Sunshine in Gardens Is Trend Taught by War | 1 | | | | | | | | + { Annual flowers require sunshine; so do vegetables, and so do you. Gardeners by the million who dur- ing the war devoted their attention to food production learned the value | of sunshine both to gardens and to | themselves, and came to the con- clusion that over most of the coun- try both gardens and homes had been too much shaded. Gardenmg in the sun proved to ; be delightful as well as healthful. Natural suntan was obtained more | easily than by a long trip to the beach; and they. were astonished by the vigor of growth shown by flow- ers in the sunny vegetable garden, @s compared with those in crowded beds and borders, competing with the roots of trees and shrubs for food, and limited to a few hours daily of the life-giving sunshine. This experience is making a change in many gardens, whose owners are determined no longer to be forest people, inquiring about every attractive flower which they wish to grow, whether it is one of the few subjects that do well in the shade. They are making changes which open their homes and gardens to the stn, with shad only in care-. fully planned places, where it will serve a definite pyrpose, either of @ I- MARIGOLD: CARNATION FLOWERED. 2-MARIGOLD- SINGLE FRENCH. 3 NASTURTIUM- DWARF. 4- ALYSSUM 7 A Sunny Garden Near a Terrace, design, or function. There is noth- ing to equal the shade of a tree, when one is resti::_; after pleasant exercise in the sun; but this can- not be appreciated where there are so many trees no sunshine can pen- etrate their canopy. Even about the house, sunshine is needed, To reduce the number of trees and shrubs and to introduce color jnto front yard plantings, an- nual flowers may be planted to fol- low spring bulbs, which provide the first flowers of spring. If bulbs are planted deeply, they need not be lifted each year; and seeds of an- nuals may be sown above them as soon as the ground warms up. The plan which accompanies this article shows how to arrange .an attractive planting of marigolds, nasturtiums and alyssum in front of a terrace, and as a border to a walk. One of the tall, ecarnation- type marigolds is used in the back- ground, with a single French vari- ety of dwarf habit in front. To border the walk, plant dwarf nasturtiums, of the ,single or dou- ble type, with alyssum, either white or violet next the walk. If the nas- turtiums are yellow or orange, alys- sum violet queen will produce a striking effect, or plants of this va- riety may be alternated with white alyssum, PAGE SEVEN POTATOES AND OTHER VEGETABLES FOR SALE Copperskin La.
