TOM LINDER / COMMISSION ER WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1946 torial - By TOM LINDER day almost, we see in the pa- e some government. economist. ington is sending out state- iat farm prices are going down. pure propaganda. The wish to that thought. u will turh to your old news- les of 2 years ago you will see se same predictions were coming ashington then. ember, 1944, the war was to a close; and. predictions of prices in 1945 were freely pre- rom Washington. eproducing herewith an aude he Market Bulletin of November 4. This information eontained rticle is of such vital importance can not be too often repeated or dely: circulated. rm pene and National - Income d From The Market Bulletin of November 8th., 1941 tice in todays paper where the | 1 States Department of Agricul- rophesying lower farm income | year1945. 1s consequences to this country expected from lowering of farm umount of farm the amount of the national income. 1ational income in peacetimes re- reasonably constant at seven he farm income. faining and increasing the na- arm income is just as vital and ry to business and industry as it farmer himself. ESS AND INDUSTRY TAKE a HEED -an old saying that, when depres- ne on, prices of farm products st to go down. S Saying merely outs the cart be- e horse.? It really substitutes fect for the cause. truth of the matter is, when farm o down this causes the depres- alling farm prices cause the ather than the panic causing the prices to fall. iness income is to continue at levels. If pay envelopes of in- al pees are to remain at pres- Tf sales of merchandise are at present levels, then the with the national. income over PATS during peacetimes show able jncome deter- | farm income must be substantially ine ereased, FARM INCOME DETERMINES NATIONAL INCOME A study and comparison - of the farm that the farm income remains about one- ~ seventh of the national income and that the national - income is seven times the farm income. There is a reason. for this which ean not be changed. It is a natural economic: Jaw which no Congress can amend or re- peal. Lets see what the reason is that forces the national income to remain in constant. relation to the farm ineome.. FARM PRICES DETERMINE THE MARKETS FOR INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS The farmer is the greatest market on- earth for industrial products. This is especially true with regard to expend- products. Industrial products which continually wear out and must be replaced are purchased in greater quan- tities by farmers than any other group. Tractors, threshing machines, har- vesters, binders, combines, plows, hoes, rakes, harness, fertilizer,. lumber, nails, wire, bags, bas eeing, and so on down the line continues the innumerable list. Whenever farm prices begin to sag the farmers buying power is vegies Whenever the farmers buying power is curtailed, there is a smaller market for the products of industry of all kinds. Whenever farm prices go down, there must-be a cut in the hours and wages of industrial employees. The only alternative to ae is 55 let millions of these employees out of a job and put them on the government dole. You cannot allow farm prices to go down without the whole country paying the: penalty. Tt is just as important to the banker, business man, the industrialist and to all their employees for farm prices to be high as it is to the farmer himself. NATIONAL DEBT AND INCOME The figures that are given out from Washington today as the national 1n- come are about fifty per cent too high. Actually our national income is around $75, 000,000,000. Phis is aug- mented with $7 75,000, Of JO, OOO of govern- ment spending. The $75 government spending is not income. It simply represents an inerease In the na- tional debt which the people themselves must pay. It is the same thing as if the pople individually were borrowing and spend- Sie 000 0 0,000 are helpless. tional Income. ing $75,000,000,000 a year more their individual i incomes. When war-spending stops; when national debt can no longer be inere then one of two things is inevitable One of these two things is as ce to oceur as it is certain that the tide rise and fall in the ocean. Either our national income will. around $75,000,000,000, with farm eome at less han $11, 000, 000,000, or the farm income ae he increased around $20,000,000, 000 so as to mainta the national income by around ee 00 000,000. NOT A PLEA FOR FARMER This is not a plea for farmers. not a plea for parity | or equity farmers. Let us forget entirely, for time being whether the farmer is ceiving a fair price or not. + Let_ simply look at the matter in the light of what is required to sustai sition after this great world. wat. Any effort on the part of Congres and the administration to maintain industrial income without first inere ing farm income is doomed to failure The farm income holds and sust the national income as surely as the dan holds the water in the lake. The water in the lake will not ris higher than the dam. The national income wiil nek ris = higher than the sustained ratio of fan | income will permit it to rise. There are many things that I want to tell you about. Itis too much for one article, and today I want to tell vou about the Big Trees. Most of the people have heard about | the Redwoods of California, but very few people know a them. Standing under these Big Trees you cannot help, but realize how small man is. How brief our days are is impressed on your mind when you know some- thing of their age. The Sequoia Gigantea known as- Big Trees grow on the western slopes of the: Sierra Nevada Mountains. The ages of these. elants. are almost unbelievable, running as much as 4500 venge e To get an idea how long a period of time 4500 years is, let us think of it in terms of world history. : According to the best information flood occurred in the the year 2486 B.
