CRATIC SOCIETYECUALITY OF ALL BEFORE THE LAW There is no difference in the prin- to guarantee la- bor a minimum wage and a law to guar- antee the farmer a minimum price for his Grop in line and on an equality with such labor wage. In fact the price which the farmer 1931-1935 wage for his | ciple involved. There is,-of course. marked difference in the position of tl two groups. One group is in a positi to demand. The other group can onl ask for justice at your hands. One of the remarkable signs of th times is the fact that some of the lab leaders today are demanding hi wages for their own organized groups and are at the same time demand _ lower wages for the farmerthe un ganized group. There is a persistent and insister demand, largely government - inspire to force the American farmer to ac _ wages on the same basis as is now pa in other countries of the world. They propose to force the farmer aceept low world standard wages_ forcing him to sell his crops in compe tion with and at world prices. The very basis and foun tion of our National economic policy symbolized bv the Smeot- Hawley Ta Act of 1930. The reason that I say the Se Hawley Tariff Act symbolizes the ba thinking of America is because it - - passed a the republican adminis _ tion and has been kept in force by t democratic administration since Mare 1933, more than 12 years. The very foundation rock is pro tion of American producers and An ican labor against cheap wages cheap commodities in the world marke Suppose that the farmers of Am ica were strongly organized'as : ag Suppose that such a farm orga tion should demand very high prices fe farm products in the Suppose that such farm organiz _ at the same time demanded a cut i : dustrial wages to the world level United Sta If this were fhe case, I pre: that almost every one would say the farmers making such demands we unfair and unreasonable to the. working people of the country. Ts it not obvious to every . | that it is equally unfair and oo able to expect the farmer in the States to labor. for a wage that i is In with the world level? : The American farmers. cannot duce at world prices or even at the cent United States prices of farn ducts and maintain decent Ame living standards, TOM LIND Commissioner of Agri a Address all items: for publicatiom and: all requests to be put. on the mailing list and for change of.address tu STATE a OF MARKETS: 222 STATE CAPITOL. Tom Linder: Atlanta, Ga. | Dear Mr. Linder: ae 14, I have been so impressed with your editorial in market bulletin that I want to express my appreci for your efforts in trying to do something to hel thern agriculture. I have for some years been distu: over the outlook for cotton. No commodity has e1 contributed so much to the well-being of mankind cotton has, and why we American people wou so dumb, and so politically minded that we wil keep quiet and see our cotton industry smothere by cheap imports from other countries and by paper industry in this country. Right now this sect: is being stripped of all the young timber for pulpy and nearly everything the farmer buys is put paper and it looks like the Government is trying to fo the farmer to buy his fertilizer in paper bags. I th eae its high time for the south to wake up and quit pl: ing politics and get together and try to defend = ture of our country. With every good wish I am yours; Sincerely, F. E. WELLS.
