How fo Establish or Improve Pastures By O. E. SELL, Pasture Specialist Georgia Agricultural Experiment Station Experiment, Georgia Land Preparation Clear brush, ston Ss and unnecessary trees. Roughitand should be smooth- -ed out so that the pasture may be mowed later. pastures with a fair to good stand of berritida or dallis grass may require only sod scarification w a disk harrow previous to fertilization and seeding. Where new pastures are to be established a. thorough seedbed should be prepared and firmed. ; Fertilization Apply 1 to 2 tons stone and at least 600 pounds of 18 percent super phosphate, or 800 to 1500 pounds of basic slag per acre. Potash and nitrate of soda may also be applied at a rate of 75 to 150 pounds per acre. Where manure is available it will aid greatly in getting wit ter pasture clovers estoblished. While these rates may appear high, it should be remembered that lime does not have to be applied more often than once in 6 to 10 years and-phosphate and potash to 8 years, depending on the initial rate. Seeding An Adapted and persistent grass sod is a first necessity in any permanent pasture. | muda is best adapted to all soils and all conditions and should be sprigged in spring unless a fair to good of linies Dallis grass (10 lbs. per acre) may be seeded on bottomlands or on good p land soils in early spring (not in fall). Lesped should be sown in spring at a rate of 12 to 18 pounds per acre. Hither Kobe, common or Korean, or a mix ture may be sown. One or more winter clovers should be sownwhite dutch, ladino, crimson, hep, bur, of thise must be sown in fall except white dutch and ladino clover; these two. may be sown either in fall or spring. Rates of seed 0 per acre: crimson15 to 20 Ibs. clean seed or 35 to 50 lbs. unhulled seed; hep, white dutch and ladi bur clover5 bu. seed in the bur or hulled and scarified seed. Seed should ( harrowed into the soil and covered lightly. Inoculation Where clovers have not pre. viously grown, the seed must be well inoculated to insure establishment. Bur clover requires a differ inoculation than the other clovers. is V. Pasture Management While the abov | practices are the most important, they may result. zero or but little improvement if the pasture not managed properly. Practice controlled grazin do not graze too early in the season, never over. graze, and rotate the grazing if possible by ha | more than one pasture or by dividing one pastu into several. Mowing is not the most importan ture improvement practice but weeds are sometimes present in sufficient numbers to crowd the desirable pasture plants, especially the first year after pas sneonpene a eee is ee to giv ?
