But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.St. John 10:1 and 2. THE COTTON COUNCILAT COST On January 22nd the Cotton Council met in Mem- ronan, The ae is an ay by Mr. sho la address itself to the cotton es of this ntr oa why the representative of a British syndicate d. also be the head of an organization to plan the re of American cotton.is also a question that should address itself to the most serious consideration of our eople. ae Osear Johnson is a very pleasant, affable gen- ana man whom I admire for his ea and a man m I respect for his intelligence. But regardless of these attributes in Mr. Johnson, am still pusled to know why a British syndicate, that ants the cheapest cotton possible, should be able to have their man at the head of the American Cotton Coun- cil, an organization which is supposed to be interested 1 getting the best income for Americans who produce, andle and spin cotton. HOW THE BRITISH SPINNER FARES ngland | appearing in the Journal of Commerce January 8rd, 1945, is most interesting and I am reproducing: it rewith for your information. : S BRITISH SPINNING MILLS HAVE BEST WAR YEAR ; British cotton mills in 1944 had their best year since the outbreak of the war, the London Daily Mail which arrived here yesterday revealed. _ Average dividends increased to 11 P. C, in 1944, compared with 10.38 P. C. in 1943; 8.8 P. C. in 1940; 5.39 P. C. in 1939; 5.53 P. C. in 1938. There were only eight spinning mills which did not distribute dividends in 1944 compared with 11 in 1943 and 53 in 1938, the Daily Mail said. Average profit of 63 mills amounted to $33, 960, BRITISH SPIN NERS ARE SELLING IN AMERICA In connection with the foregoing, it is interesting to note that in many stores in differ err sections in Ameriea, x, handkerchiefs and other items are marked Made ta Eng! and.* It is amazing that American cotton mills are unable 0 provide cotton. garments and other cotton items which we need so badly, but at the same time English mills are ble to make these same items and ship them into this WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 1945 they could have been made in American mills out of _ Johnsons connection with a foreign interest is apparent, _ American people to benefit by unlimited foreign trade. products in exchange for shipload after shipload of iro and steel, there would have been no Pearl Harbor and ne ; not furnished the materials for the implements of dea In this connection, the. following news item from. - eral government to furnish farmers tractor and combines 7 COM MISSION ER Hnglish-made aniidles is not any cheaper: than the price of American articles of the same kind. The raw cotton from which these articles were hee may have been grown in Brazil, Egypt or China, when American cotton. Mr. Johnson has a lot of company throughout the United States who are agitating by radio, newspapers and motion pictures, for unlimited international trade. Mr, open and above board. The foreign connections of. some of the other agin for international trade is not so apparent or disclosed. . You may rest assured, however, that those who- are agitating unlimited foreion. trade have foreign connections somewhere, or else they are under siegen influences eithe directly or indirectly. There is no earthly way for the rank and file of the Unlimited foreign trade can only destroy our economy, lower our living standards and lead us into war. ; The masses of the people will suffer from Lone livin standards. The masses of the people must furnish the blood and tears to fight the wars. The masses of the people cannot benefit Froth cithe the foreign trade or the wars. AT COST : All of these agitators for cheap cotton harp on t eost of growing cotton. Every time they speak they want the price of cotton based on the cost of producing cotton. ; They want the Federal government to interpeee and permit the farmer to get only. the cost of his product. Did vou ever hear one of them agitating for the Fe at cost? Did you ever hear one of them advocating a lw provide fertilizer, feed and seed to farmers at cost? Did you ever hear any of these world traders ad eating that the farmer should be furnished transpor tion, Insurance and loans at cost? = Do you believe that the British syndicate which - Johnson represents would be willing: to sell its own cot at cost, if it did not belong to English spinners? You kK they w ould not. You know that an English syndicate that was hom ly in the farming business growing cotton, would want jus as much as they could get for their cotton, just like you or - The fact that Mr. J ohnsons English syndicate harping on sclling eotton at cost is ample evidence tha his syndicate is connected with British spinners.
