COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 1944 EDITORIALBy_ Tom Linder a the Market Bulletin of June 28th, I published a es of agricultural planks that would be presented to the iocratie National Convention and the Republican Na- mal Convention in Chicago. These planks were unanimously sone by the Na- mal Farm Committee. I, as President of the National rm Committee, was directed to present these agrienl- ral planks to the two National Conventions. When the Republican Convention met in Chieago T esented these planks to the Platform Committee of Republican Party and when the Democratic National ention met in Chicago I presented these planks to the form Committee of the Democratie Party. The planks nted to both Platform Committees were as follows: The National Farm Committee is presenting to 1e Conventions of the National Democratie Party and the National Republican Party the following agri- eultural platform for the 1944 election: _ BE IT RESOLVED in the interest of farmers, abor, industry, business and general National econ-- omy as well as winning the war, making a durable peace, preservation of state rights and maintenance of constitutional government, that we urge the adop- tion of the following planks in the platforms of na- onal political parties: FIRSTThat Congress remove restrictions and regimentation of the American Farmer and on Aegri- cultural Production. SECONDThat Congress promptly enact an honest par ity law. The present so- -called parity is a fake. It is unjust and a e@ross discrimination against the American Farmer.. We demand actual parity | based on present cost of production, including all farm labor. Any parity based on cost of production thirty ears ago 1s Sede intended to destroy American | Agriculture. and to reduce the American Farmer to a state of equality with foreign peon labor. THIRDThat Congress promptly enact neces- sary legislation to either eliminate the OPA or make it impossible for the OPA to fix prices on commodities or goods manufactured from them that does not take into full calculation the cost of farm labor. POURTHThat Congress oppose any mone- tary agreements or involvements that would permit ny International organizatiors to regulate our own domestic prices, that might involve Americans soy- ereignty through monetary alliances with foreign na- Fresh Fruits and Vegetables August 18, 1944 se Atlanta $ .90-$1.20 1.00- 1.50 2.50- 3.00 eer don: 1.50- 1.75 Corn (Green) per doz. ears. .20- _.30 ~ Eggplant, bu. hprs. 1.75- 2.00 kra, per 8-qt. baskets -19- 1.00 | Peaches, per bu. baskets 4.50- 4.75 Pears (Pineapple) bulk, per bu. . 1.00- 1.25 Peas (Field), bulk, per bu. 50- .75 Peppers, per bu. hprs. : _ 1.50- 2.00 uash, per bu. hprs. 1.00- 1.25 weet Potatoes, per bu. baskets. We demand a return to the provision of the Constitution which requires that The Congress shall have the Power to coin money and fix the value thereof. RIFTHThat Congress cooperate with other nations of the world in the promotion of world peace without committing our country to involvements or alliances that will involve us in foreign wars or that would surrender one iota of our Sovereignty. That part of the platform of both the Democratic and Republican Parties dealing with agriculture, as adopted by their recent National Cede is given ee for your information: PLATFORMDEMOCRATIC PARTY Price guarantees and crop insurance to farmers w h all practical steps: To keep agriculture on a parity with industry. and labor; To foster the success of the small independent farmer To aid the home ownership of family-sized farms; To extend rural electrification and develop broader domestic and foreign markets for agricultural products. . -PLATFORMREPUBLICAN PARTY We salute the American farmers, their wives and fam- ilies for their magnificent job of wartime production and their contribution to the war effort, without which victor: could not be assured. They have aceomplished this spite of labor shortages, a bungled and inexcusable m chinery program and confused, unreliable, eae price and production administration. Abundant production is the best security against q flation. Governmental policies in war and in peace must be practical and efficient with freedom from regimen tion by an impractical Washington bureaucracy in ord to assure independence of operation and bountiful p duction, fair and equitable market prices for farm pro duets, and a sound program for conservation and use 0 our soil and natural resources. Educational progress an the social and economic stability and well- being of th farm family must be a prime national purpose. = For the establishment of such a program we propose the following 1 A tee of Agriculture under practical and experienced administration free from regimentation and confusing Government manipulation and. control of farm programs. 2.
