DEPARTMENT 9 (43 WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 19, 1944 AGRICULTURE _ EDITORIALBy Tom Linder o On Wednesday, J anuary 12th, Georgia producers and distributors of milk held a meeting in Macon, Ga. The plight of milk producers in Georgia has become gislature recognized the seriousness of the situation. The Legislature appointed. a committee of four from the ouse and two from the Senate to make a thorough investi- on of the milk supply situation. This committee was so to make every possible effort to get relief in Wash- ngton from the O. P. A. The Legislative committee consists of Senators Walter arrison, and Henry H. Arnold and Representatives W. Broome, Glenn 8. Phillips, J. Roy McCracken and P. -Rossee. : _ The hearing in Macon was presided over by Senator Harrison and everyone was given ample opportunity to be ard. ; v~ The facts brought out at the Macon meeting demon- strated beyond any shadow of a doubt that most milk oducers would be forced out of business unless they received more money for milk. i note in news releases from Washington that the head of the O. P. A. has virtually turned down the appeal of the milk producers without even waiting for this committee to report the evidence brought out at the Macon meeting. ~ his fact within itself shows what the people are up gainst in dealing with O. P. A. and other government bureaus. The very idea of an appeal being turned down before the evidence can be presented is repugnant to Am- rican ideals and. will destroy this country unless it is topped by the Congress. What Are The Facts About Milk _ The Macon meeting was attended by dairymen and milk producers from every section of the state. _. One of the.best milk men in the Savannah area pro+ duced the record of his operations for the last three months dosing $300.00 per month in actual cash outlay. The Milk Control Board (the old board) failed to grant increase at that time, due to opposition. from consum groups. | if When the O. P. A. took over, they froze the price of milk at the then existing prices, so that milk producers were handicapped to begin with by the O. P. A. < The O. P. A. at that time failed to put any ceiling feed prices. Feed prices soared and soared and when O A. did finally put a ceiling price on feed, the cost of fe and the price of milk were out of all proportion to eae other, : ee /*from time to time the milk producers of Georgia ha appealed to O. P. A. and implored O. P. A. for some relie through a raise in the price of milk to the producer. What small relief has been granted by the O. P. A. h been utterly inadequate. The increase in price to the producer during the two years has been from eight per cent to ten per ce: During the same time, the cost of feed has increased. proximately one-hundred per cent. Not only has the p of feed increased approximately one-hundred per cet b the quality of the feed and its suitableness for milk pr Difference In Treatment Of Milk And Feed By 0.P The unfairness of O. P. A. to milk producers can well illustrated by the different approach of the O. to ceiling prices on milk and ceiling prices on feed. While O. P. A. has continued to enforce a hard an fast ceiling on milk, the bridle has been taken off the p. of feed. The ceiling price on feed is a floating ceiling, __ The ceiling price on feed is on a cost-plus basis. Why Is The Farmer Picked Out To Be | Thus Unjustly Treated? Tf it is fair and right for millers to receive -eost-plus for their product; if it is right and fair for ship builders and others to receive cost-plus for their products; if it is right and fair for all public utilities to receive cost-plus for their serv- ees, then, why in the name of common justice should not the farmer receive cost-plus for his milk and other. products? 7 See How can the farmer be expected to continue to produce at an actual monetary loss? _ The very fact that the O. P. A. in Washing- ton was so hasty in denying an appeal of milk presented, is ample proof that the O. P. A. rec- ognized the justice of the claim of the milk pro- ducers and that O. P. A. recognized its inability to show that this appeal of Georgia farmers should not be granted. _ Certainly, a committee from the House and Senate of the Georgia Legislature is entitled to the courtesy of a fair review of the testimony presented before them by such a governmental agency before the case is decided. oe Milk Strike Looms In Savannah The pages of the Market Bulletin have re- peatedly called attention to our Representatives in Washington and the bureaucrats, that the farmers do not want to strike. Attention has been -ealled repeatedly to the fact that the farmers do not even want to make any money out of war- time conditions. : Attention has been called to the fact that all the farmer wants is to be able to produce to the utmost of his ability for our nation, for our armed services and for our allies.. _ The dairymen in the Savannah area who have shreatened to go on strike have done so only hen forced to this point by their own govern- ment. The milk producers in the Savannah shed at the Macon meeting, made it clear that they would continue to produce milk, even at the terrible losses they were operating under, until a fair iearing can be held in Washington on the merits of their claim. _ The producers from all over Georgia made t perfectly clear at the Macon hearing that they _ Address all ems for publication and all requests to be put der postage regulations inserted one time on each request and. din, Rt..4, . + others, $1.25 doz. wanted to be patriotic; that they wanted to con- tinue to produce milk regardless of injustices so long as they could. : In the face of this kind of an American the milk producers to even have an opportunity to be heard, is ample reason why Congress should abolish the O. P. A. without delay. Necessary Milk Prices produeer to continue per gallon wholesale. Tam not as familiar with the cost and opera- ting expenses of distributors as I am with those of milk producers. But it does seem to me that 20c per quart retail is necessary if we are to con- tinue to have milk in the state. I can see no justice in low grade, out-of-state milk being sold in Georgia at prices ranging from 4 to 15 per gallon more than Georgia producers are being paid for high grade milk with high butterfat content. JI do not believe that the O. P. A. can see any justice or any reason in this. I am convineed that the O. P. A. action is purely arbitrary, unreasonable and relentless, in an effort to destroy American agriculture; in an effort to control business and business profits. Milk Or No Milk or right, the question which now presents itself to milk consumers is MILK OR NO MILK. | It was brought out very fully at the Macon meeting that milk cattle are being slaughtered as fast as the cows go dry. Dairymen simply can- not maintain dry cows until they freshen again; consequently, the dry cows go to the slaughter house. ? If the O. P. A. is permitted to continue its ar- bitrary, high-handed mistreatment of milk pro- ducers, you may rest assured that the price of milk will become an unimportant question. Peo- ple will not be interested in the price of milk, but those having small children and invalids will be faced with the burning question of where te get milk at any price. The question is real; action is urgent; time is: short. Senators and Congressmen Our Last Hope The Legislative committee will present all the evidence brought out at the Macon hearing | te di to our Senators and Congressmen. When this is producers without waiting for the evidence to be} done, I feel sure that our Senators and Congress: men will read the riot act to the head of the O. P. A. in Washington, and will see that Georgia milk producers are not arbitrarily destroyed as is evidently the intention of this federal bureau. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture.
