_WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 1943, TOBACCO si iting in Mitchell oe Node: July 27, visit- e markets in Pelham, Tifton: Adel, Nashville, Way- - Blackshear, Douglas, Baxley. and Hazlehurst. Last spring, on account of late freezes and blue mold, acco plants were extr emely scarce and late. The effect th s can be seen in the toasacco fields. In-most cases it is ve o see where the earliest plants were 24 out. and where Jater plants came in. Many Fields of tobacco are Hist now being. cropped for first or second time. It will be at least three w eeks e harvesting of tobacco will be completed. he tobacco markets in Georgia should be kept open east through the month of August. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday I visited nine eo markets and went into sixteen warehouses. T did see a single warchouse that was as much as half filled h tobacco at the beginning of the sale. Sever al warehouses did not have more than a third ot oor covered with tobaeco at the beginning of the sale. fuch of this vears crop is very light and the tonnage be much smaller than last vear. In my opinion, a 25 cent reduction in pounds from last vear would be a very l estimate. : ae do: not believe there gould possibly be more than 000,000 t6 48,000,000 pounds at the outside. There is very little difference in the price being paid e biryers for different grades. Most of the tobacco med to he bringing from 38c to 44e per pound. T got mpression from looking at the cards on the different ets of tobacco that a very large percentage of it was ging 41e to 44c per pound. | My. information i is that the tobacco crop is also short j in Carolinas. This being the case, I believe that the ceil- rice on tobaceo will a raised before all of this years p is sold. OF course, the tobacco market inthe a establishea 20 belt is not seasonal like it is in Georgia, but con- almost throughout the vear more like tse cotton Georgia Should Grow More anaes The Georgia crop of tobacco should be increased. Geor- now | produces about one-eighth of the tobacco. We uld produce one-fourth of it. This would make the orgia crop a real factor in the market and would give us cient volume of tobacco to encourage the establish of redrying plants and storage warehouses. ayhen | we have redrying plants and storage warehouses Beck Sales, Georgia Auction Markets Reports received at this office show following average prices paid BO: ] hogs at the Livestock Auction Markets named: July 30, 1943 aa Per CWT -$14.05 - 14.30 uy 22 Hkhurs day) Valdosta ere ee -TOP FED CATTLE ly ae (Fhursday)Valdosta y ' (Monday )Sylvester y x (Wednesday)Albany ily 28 (Wednesday)Vidalia..... Peanuts me I did a cet to go all over the peanut belt on this. but did see many fields of peanuts. - Most of these pe showed results of too much rain. Lots of grass and w are in the peanuts.
