te COMMISSIONER AGRIC ULTU RE In 1874 the Georgia State Deparement of Agriculture was er ated. The purpose of the Department of Agriculture is to. foster, encourage and aid the farmers of the state. From time to time, as the state has developed and as the. yroblems. of agriculture have increased, the Legislature has mnacted additional laws to make it possible for the Department Agriculture to be of real help to the farmers. The Commissioner of Agriculture is charged by law, first, be it disseminating information of all kinds to the people that, hi judgment, is of interest to farmers. 4 Tf the farmers are furnished sufficient information on Pall ibjects they are in position to determine for themselves the yest course of action to pursue with regard to, their individual } rming operations. ee ihe Market Bulletin is the only possible 1 way that the Com- Ba is the ae means by which the. farniers can be fully ap- od. of public events as they occur which have a direct bear- yn the problems of agriculture. oo oo NOTICE (o" a The Georgia Market: Bulletin belongs to the farmers of the state. Chemistry Division The law places the State Chemist under the Commissioner of Agricuture. This is of vital importance. S _ This year we have taken and analyzed more than 10,000 samples of fertilizer. Each of these samples must be analyzed in the Chemistry Department to determine whether or not the fertilizer sold was in conformity with the guarantee. We have this year collected hundreds of penalties on fertilizer and turned the money to the farmers who used the fertilizer. This would have been impossible had it not been for the Chemistry Department to analyze these samples. ; 4 When food inspectors take samples of food they fae pe? analyzed by the Chemist in order to deter nive whether the es is fit for human consumption. ; Milk samples must be run to determine the bacteria a d- butter fat content. _ ae In the treatment of many lvestock diseases it is vitally neces. sary to have the Chemistry Department determine whether | 9 not certain disease germs are present. : The seed inspection laboratory is also. incorporated in: the (Continued on Page Two) "Livestock Sales, Georgia Mactan Markets Reports received at this office show following average prices paid : for cai 1 hogs: at the Live Stock Auction Markets named: denote 15, 1943. It is highly important for the farmers of the state to understand the prime import- ce and the part played by the Division of Chemis- ry in carrying out the agricultural laws of the state. _Before the Chemist can analyze a sample of fer- a iZer it is, of course, necessary to draw the sample. The drawing of a fertilizer sample isa very important ud highly technical procedure. It is necessary to send out fertilizer inspectors to the farms to get these samples. The present law provides for fifty of these inspectors to cover the entire state for a period of not re than four months of each year. Food Division Nothing is mote important to the health of the people than wholesome food. The Food Division of _ the Department of. Agriculture is charged with the rsponsibility for inspecting places that sell food and feed. This is done not only to see that the food is wholesome, but that places vee Egod is served are sanitary and clean. Feed for animals, poultry, See must also re in- arive. Thousands of samples of food and feed are en every year by inspectors of the Department and griculture. A-great deal of food and feed has been ance with the law, and its sale has been forbidden in the state by the Commissioner of Agriculture. \ Veterinary Division . The Veterinary Division in the Department of griculture performs many services for the farmers. ve now have special field men who are stationed in sections producing beef and hogs on commercial ales i in commercial quantities, rendering free service to farmers in inoculating animals against contagious nd infectious diseases. : elling us about an outbreak in disease of animals any kind, anywhere in the state, a veterinarian is at t once sent to investigate and render every aid pos- sible. When necessary to prevent the spread of in- ectious and contagious diseases the Commissioner of. riculture issues a quarantine so that the animals within that area cannot be moved out until the dis- ease has been brought under control. The Commissioner of Agriculture also furnishes Jeterinarian to work in cooperation with the Na- onal Poultry Improvement Board. Wonderful pro- ss has.been made in the last two years in develop- ing the poultry industry in the state. The Veterinary Department also has charge of. dairy inspections. pectors who have been especially trained for their work. These inspectors visit every dairy within the te at regular intervals and render a full port to ne Commissioner of Agriculture on each dairy in the Bureau of Markets The Bureau of Markets, within the State Depart- nt of Agriculture, was created to assist the farm- n marketing their products. ; The Director of the Bureau of Markets is charged = Ce MARKET BULLETIN E Dacisa to see that it contains the necessary plant oods so that the animals or poultry eatirg it will} nalyzed by the State Chemist in the Department of. und in the last twelve months that was not in com-| ducts of all kinds ind rendering every assistance pos- sible to growers, especially of perishable crops, in getting a market for their products. The Bureau of Markets has rendered wonderful service in this Hine and has sold thousands of carloads of crops of all kinds to the markets of the North and East. Farmers Markets ing farmers markets to be built. The splendid chain of markets that we now have had their beginning at that time. From May 10, 1941 through December 31, Farmers Markets. It is vitally necessary that these farmers mar- kets always remain under direct control of the farm-| ers. Should any of these markets ever fall into the} sentatives of the farmers they would not serve their farm products instead of getting a better price for the farmer for his products. The system of farmers markets is, of course, far from complete. It has many imperfections and needs; a great deal of improvement. as fast as money ean be had with which to do it. it. ad Especially during this great war will farmers markets be vitalnot only to the farmers, but to the city dwellers. I have before me an secs relative to Russia and this shows the situation in Russia today, some of the highlights which are as follows: 1. Ninety-five per cent of all food eonsumed in cities is rationed. 2. Honey is $50. 00 a pounda prive equiva- lent to a weeks salary for a well- paid factory worker. 3. Meat scraps are $20.00 a pound. 4, Eggs are $3.00 apiece. 5. Milk is $5.50 a eup. We must depend, especiatly in Atlanta and Macon, on these farmers, markets to feed the city people as well as eee upon them to sell the farm- ers Crops. \ We must have canning machinery on the nen. ers markets so that the city housewives ean buy direct from farmers in the summer and can vegetables for: their winter use. TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture. SPECIAL NOTICE _ All flowers and seed and ornamental nursery stock notices appearing in this and the past two issues were received and intended for the monthly Flowers and Seed Issue of January 6th, but because of lack of space were necessarily divided into the three groups... all such type notices which have been re- ceived since January 10th will be published in our oe 8rd Flower edition.
