AGRICULTURE COMM Sen ER arketing | EDITORIALBy Tom Linder Sometime ago I asked the readers of the Georgia Market letin to write me the amount of merchandise they had sold ough notices carried in the Market Bulletin. Of course, I did not receive replies from all of them, but se who did reply stated they had sold merchandise in vary- ng amounts and when we added the amount sold by each of we found that those who reported had sold more than one alf million dollars through the notices in the Market Bulletin in year. Most of this was things that they could not have sold all had it not been for the Market Bulletin. pe Farmers Markets In February 1936 I opened the first State Farmers Market eorgia in Atlanta. During 1936 I opened markets in Atlanta, Macon, Valdosta, thomasville, Glennville and Claxton. On May 10, 1941 we opened the new State Farmers -Mar- n Atlanta,at Murphy Avenue and Sylvan Road. This is the gt st farmers market anywhere in the country and the most _ It covers fifteen acres of land, with three large steel sheds *x300 each, with 117 brick units for merchants, besides the ninistration building. During the eight months of 1941 we sold ls the At- nta Market $3,787,784.79. - This business has grown tremendously. Deine the twelve (Continued on Page Two) Fresh Fruits and Vegetables . Marketing Georgia Products : (Continued from Page One) nths of 1942, through the Atlanta Market we sold 373,381.86. : During the eight month of 1941 we sold through th markets in Georgia $5,151,880.58, and during twelve months of 1942 we sold through all the mers markets in Georgia $13,912,693.09. was $19,064,573.67. ; (For your full information I am reproducing on last page of this issue a more complete statement ales on all the State Farmers Markets. As most readers of the bulletin know, there was any appropriation made by the Legislature for ng these markets. cs : When the new market. at Murphy Avenue and Ivan Road was built the Department of Agriculture $231,261.75, which was advanced by. the Treas- r under authorization of Governor Talmadge. | The fees and rentals from the market have been back into the Treasury since its opening on May (1941. During the nearly twenty months from y 10, 1941 through December 31, 1942 we paid ee the Treasury against this advance $134,- It @ very important to the farmers of Georgia as as to city populations for these markets to be nded and greater facilities provided. n the summer of 1942 the Commissioner of Agri-| ture organized a cooperative for the purpose of ing some grading machinery on some of the mar- for the use of Georgia farmers. ~ 3 This is a self-liquidating project and this grading machinery will pay for itself. rchase of this grading machinery was furnished to cooperative by the Trust Company of Georgia, ugh the offorts of Honorable Robert Strickland Boe The Long Pull To fully develop the possibilities of our farmers cets we will need to send men to the markets of Yorth and East as salesmen for farmers produce. will also need to perfect standard grades and Every section that has developed a successful ting system for its products has perfected stand- rades and packs and has also developed its own Is to go on each package as a guarantee of the ality of the product. As an illustration, everyone is familiar with the utation of California peaches. Everyone knows out Florida oranges and grapefruit. Everyone about Virginia hams and Maine potatoes. One of the most important things we can do is to velop a Georgia label. oe ae Georgia Cracker 4 am in receipt of a copy of suggestions made by noted Georgian relative to a standard Georgia label Georgia products, which I am reproducing in part he last page of this issue. . think this is very important. | > TOM MIND The grand total for 1941 and 1968 on all mar Pets Feed Georgia And Help Feed The Nation (Continued from Page One) enable him to bring every available factor of pro- duction into use. ; Georgia Crops are Seasonal While Georgia farmers can produce the food to feed the people, many of our crops are seasonal and our entire years supply goes on the market within two or three months. s This is especially true of vegetables and fruit. .. Canning Piants The rural sections of Georgia already have more than three hundred community canning plants. The credit for this must be given to the untiring efforts of the Division of Vocational Education under the able leadership and guidance of Mr. M. D. Mob- ley, State Director; also to the loyal cooperation of the vocational teachers and, in many cases, the assist- ance of Home Economics teachers, as well as to the cooperation of the people in the community. These community canning plants have proved their great worth to the people in these more than three hundred communities, as they enable the house- wife during the relative short season of production to put up for use throughout the year the fruits, vege- tables and meats required for the family. Canning Plants on State Farmers Markets It is my purpose to establish some canning plants on State Farmers Markets. Just how much of this can be done, I do not know at present. The Legislature is now in session and I believe they will give us as much money as they can for this purpose. Beginning with Atlanta, the largest city in the |state, and going on down to as many smaller towns as possible, we can see the unlimited possibilities in having canning plants on these markets. The people of Atlanta, for instance, can go to the Farmers Market at Murphy Avenue and Sylvan Road, and buy vegetables and fruits from farmers and put up a winters supply at a reasonable cost. The state would, of course, have to furnish ex- ? perienced operators to do the actual canning so as to get a safe, edible product and as nearly a uniform product as possible. Some days ago Mr. Lamar Ball wrote an article in The Atlanta Constitution about this, and I have re- ceived wonderful encouragement from his letter. _ A letter from Honorable F. L. Gibson of Thomas- ville, Georgia, illustrates the great interest in canning projects. I am reproducing this letter on the back page of this issue. a Community Cooperation Required In order to put these projects over the coopera- tion of communities is necessary and I would like to hear from those communities having State Farmers Markets with regard to helping put these projects over. . Lets get together and help ourselves, then we can help the Nation. . ; TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture. FLOWERS AND SEED FOR SALE. FLOWERS AND SEED _ FOR SALE Dal Will exc.
