DEPARTMENT TOM LINDER AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER EDITORIALBy Tom der yt have just returned from Washington where the confer-_ ice committee of the House and Senate was debating the erms of the price control bill as it relates to agriculture. Driving along the hiehway just this side of Woashineten aw the place where the first Battle of Manassas (or Bull Run) was fought in the War Between the States. It i is. only about a ten minute drive by oe from the of the first Battle of Slee to the site of the second battle of Manassas. - Many bloody battles were aed around this neighborhood, ne uding the Battle of the Wilderness; the Battle of Thorough- e Gap, the Battle of Guilford Court House, and many other bloody engagements. | _ The Confederate armies under Lee and Stonewall Jackson e the bravest that history records. : These Confederate armies followed the most superb leader- ship that can be found in all the pages of history. The final outcome of that bloody war was determined by n who had no especial military genius. The men who really ecided the fate of the Confederacy were General Sheridan and xeneral Sherman. General Sheridan marched down through the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and when he had passed by 1e said, A crow cannot fly across the valley unless he car- ies his food with him. It is necessary that we produce every. pound of fae crops that we possibly can. In order to do this prices must go up the cost of producing these crops goes up. If this natural | of economics is interfered with then our war efforts will hav been seriously crippled at the fountainhead.\ | The conference committee of the House and Senate reported a bill which carries vital safeguards to agricultu All honor is due those brave Senators and Congressmen w have been instrumental in putting in a provision that no price ceiling can be fixed on agriculture at less than the average pric of a. commodity during the ten year period from 1919 to 1929. This is of vital interest to growers of cotton, cottonseed and peanuts. 4s The provision for the guarantee of 110 per cent of parit : and the further safeguards of October 1, 1941 and Decembe 15, 1941, are most important to farmers who grow other crops The provision giving the Secretary of Agriculture veto pee (Continued on Page Two) ae Livestock Scie Georgia. TOM LINDER BUYING AND SELLING PROVISION _ SHOULD BE ELIMINATED (Continued. from Page One) as tb agricultural products is also most important. _ The Committee and Congress are to be congrat-, ulated on the retention of these provisions in the price trol bill. It is unfortunate that the Q Mahoney mendment was stricken. I hope this will be rein- rted before the bill is finally passed. BUYING AND SELLING PROVISION IS MOST = DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE ELIMINATED Ba : There is a provision in the bill as reaialcd by the conference committee which gives the adminis- trator power to buy and sell any and all commodities r the puropse of controlling prices. This is a most 7iciOus provision. Under the general terms of this provision the ministrator could use all the financial backing of e Federal Government in selling thefarmers short n all crops in the markets of New York, Chicago, id other centers. Then when the market was iven down he could turn around and buy on these same markets and make billions of dollars profit eculating in the toil and sweat of those who till he dand, and do it with their owh money in the ands of their government. It is imperative that the | tee and selling provision be oe from the | It should be remembered that under his war rowers the President, as Commander in Chief of the med forces, already has unlimited power to control nd deal with all supplies and munitions of war; their anufacture, transportation, etc. The prosecution of the war does. not, in any manner, depend on this price control bill. As a natter of fact, the price control bill does not change isting daw materially except as to agricultural oducts. Rhy TOM LINDER, = Commissioner of Agriculture. SEED FOR SALE About 1500 lbs.
