-EDITORIALBy Tom Linder

On Wednesday, May 20, 1942 there was a fest vote on the
or of the United States Senate.

The test vote came on an dolendment to the Agiogiiank

ppropriations Bill. This amendment permitted selling Gov-
ent stocks of wheat at less than the so-called parity prices
fixed by Wickard.

These parity prices fixed by Wickard are only about fifty

cent of actual parity for farm products as provided for in

Agricultural Adjustment Act. =

ke When noses were counted on this amendment eighteen Sen-
tors stood firm for the farmers against this insidious measure.

THE EFFECT OF THE VOTE OF THE SIXTY-TWO SEN-
RS WHO VOTED FOR THE. AMENDMENT WAS TO
DIATE THE PRINCIPLE OF PARITY FOR FARMERS.
e Senate could have taken action to compel Wickard to de-
mine parity according to the terms of the Agricultural Adjust-
nt Act. The Senate actually did the opposite and allowed
ckard and Company to wheedle them into a repudiation of
principle of parity for farmers.

The eighteen Senators who voted against the anicnemeat
rve the honor and support of every farmer, every small busi-
ssman, and every white collar worker i in the country. eo

The Congressional Record of May 20, 1942 will give the

FRESH FRUITS AND VEGET ABLES

On Wednesday, May 20, tore was a meeting

at the Atlanta Womans Club of representative lead-

ers of womens clubs and public spirited women, for

the purpose of carrying out the idea of eating fresh

ruits and vegetables in season and saving canned
roods for our armed forces and for winter use.

ee These ladies are very much interested and are

oing to. do everything in their power to encourage
the use of freshfruits and vegetables, as well as dry-
ng and preserving fruits for winter use.

Since the campaign was first begun for the use

of fresh fruits and vegetables conditions have de-

reloped _ make this much more important than

2 On ak ata of the shortage of rubber and gaso-
ine, and on account of rulings affecting the operation

rf trucks, it is very probable that we will be unable}

o get much of our vegetables and fruits transported
to market.

: Tf the ruling promulgated by the Office of De.
fense Transportation, requiring trucks to have a re-
turn load, is put into effect on June 1 as now pro-
: posed, it may mean that a large part of our fruit and
vegetable crops that have moved by truck may have
to move by common carrier or be left to spoil in the

aR
*

: if the truckers who have been coming to Georgia
and buying our products and paying cash for them
are put out of business, it will mean that the farmer
w ill no ae have a cash market for much of these

} oir the common Carriers oe able to move these}
oducts the farmer would have to ship them to far'

away cities on consignment, which would mean that
n most cases the farmer would not get any benefit
7 m the crops that he has grown.

oo he loyal interest displayed by these 1s ilies of
the towns and cities is most gratifying. They will
certainly be able to provide markets at least for a
great deal more of the farmers perishable crops than
he would otherwise have.

Every effort should be made. by farm families
to provide at least enough canned, preserved, and
dried fruits and vegetables for. their own use on the
farm and, if possible, some to sell.

- Wonderful work along this line is bein done
through the community canning plants, fone: ed by
he Vocational Division of the State Department of
Education. Splendid assistance is being given by vo-
ational and home economics teachers.:

A tremendous army of 4-H Club boys and pale
under the direction of the county agents, are doing a
yeoman s service along this line. -

In view of all these things it is nical gratifying

a nd heartening to see the splendid group of women

especially of our.own statestepping out in the fore-

ront of this fight to prevent a food eo this
coming winter.

The idea of using more feck fruits and Patablox

and saving tin has caught a Perviae chord i in different

SELL, IS SUBJECT TO THE PRICE CEILING.

THE MILK DIVISION OF THE PRICE ADMIN-
ISTRATION IS IN THE HANDS OF REPRESENTA-
TIVES OF LARGE PLANTS PUTTING OUT CON-
DENSED AND EVAPORATED MILK IN CANS.

From the above it can be seen that the price of
the dairymans milk is controlled by the price ceil-
ing, but the price of mixed feed which the dairymen
and other farmers buy is not controlled by the price
ceiling.

This test vote on Wednesday, May 20, resulted in
a victory for Henderson, Ginsberg, Wickard, Morgen-
thau and Company, over the farmer and over the
consuming public. This vote lays the way open to

force still lower the prices on all farm products.

MOST OF THE EIGHTEEN SENATORS WHO
VOTED AGAINST THIS AMENDMENT ARE FROM
WESTERN STATES. THEY HAVE ALWAYS
~|STOOD WITH AND VOTED WITH THE SEN-
| ATORS FROM THE COTTON, PEANUT, AND TO-
BACCO SECTION, ON ALL QUESTIONS AFFECT-
ING THE PRICE OF CROPS OF THE SOUTH.

IT IS AN UNMERITED REFLECTION ON THE

|FARMERS OF THIS SECTION THAT SOME SEN-
|ATORS FROM THE COTTON STATES WERE

TAKEN IN BY THIS INSIDIOUS DEVICE. SOME
OF THE SENATORS FROM THE COTTON STATES
DESERTED THEIR TRIED AND TRUE FRIENDS

| AND ALIGNED THEMSELVES WITH SENATORS

FROM NON-FARM SECTIONS TO START PRICES
OF FARM PRODUCTS TUMBLING DOWN HILL.

This is a body blow to the American farmer who
produces the life blood of America in war and in
peace,

I am. ait this on iaciay: May 21, the day
after the vote was taken in the Senate.

The market today has gone down on all grains
and cotton. I am told by informed traders that there

is a general undertone of weakness in the market for|

farm products, due to a loss of faith in the strength
of agriculture in the Senate.

Today wheat was off 1c a bushel; corn was off
1 3-4 a bushel; oats were down 214c a bushel, and
cotton was down $1.00 a bale. <

Farm Department Promises to Drop Plan
To Divert AAA Benefits to War Crops

WASHINGTON, May 22.
(AP)Southern congressmen
_have won from the Agriculture

Department a promise to aban-

don plans to divert upwards. of
$125,000,000 in Government
benefit payments from cotton

and tobacco to so-called war|_

crops under next years AAA

_ farm program.

The promise was made, au-

_ thoritative sources said Friday,

in connection with the Senates
approval Wednesday of a ma-

- gure permitting the department

to sell up to: 125,000,000 bushels

of Government-owned wheat
for livestock feed at below pa-
rity prices. This measure was

opposed by some senators from

- corn and wheat states, but was
- supported by many Southern
- Jawmakers.

Encourage Production
Plans had been made to over-

- haul the AAA program in such
- a way that a large portion of
the $500,000,000 soil congerva-
_ tion
- would be used, as
- payments to encourage larger
_ production of soybeans,

benefit payment

pea-
nuts and flax, for vegetable oils,
truck and vegetable crops, dairy

_ and poultry products and fruits.

The department says more of
these commodities are needed
to meet military and civilian
needs.

The
would have eliminated pay-

proposed new plans

would have been classed as war
crops. Government planners
acted upon the belief that the
public would not approve. such
payments inasmuch as cotton.
and tobacco are bringing parity
or near-parity prices.

Similar payments for wheat
would have been reduced be-
cause officials want to curtail
production of this crop, already
larger than storage facilities
can handle.

Listed as War Crop

Details of these plans were
outlined at a meeting of state
AAA committeemen at Chicago |
early this week. Southern sen-
ators, upon learning of the pos-
sible loss of cotton payments,
threatened to. join. corn-state
in opposing the ad-
ministrations request that it
be allowed to sell grain at sub-

parity prices.

It was then that the AAA

continue

otton payments. Cotton will be
listed as a war crop and ine

centive payments will be offers

ed for a slight increase in: pro-

Southern lawmakers

contended that cotton could be

classed. aS eg essential crop be-

cause cotton seed, like peanuts

and soybeans, is an. important .
source of vegetable oil.

_ Plans will be made, it was
learned, whereby tobacco bene-
fit payments will be distributed
as soil building incentives a-
mong virtually the same farm-

-ers who have been getting them

in the past.

At a resalat Jacobs feast ope by Senaton
Russell, Bankhead and MeNary, meeting with Secret
Wickard and Morgenthau, the above nefarious scheme was
hatched and the security and price guarantee of the farm
was sold lock, stock and barrel to Wickard and Morga
thau by these Senators for this paltry concession.

Instead of sticking with the mid-west farmers and up

holding the price of wheat, and thus guaranteeing
stability of the price of cotton and all other products of t
farm, these Senators traded something which did not
long to them, something which they had not earned, fo
paltry concession which ney should have defeated Me
and aboveboard. _
