TOM LINDER Bepanrmento/ (fa) AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER ILUME 24. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1942. NUMBER | EORGIA AGRICULTURAL COUNCI EDITORIALBy Tom bidder The Georgia State Agricultural Council is composed of all. ricultural agencies, both state and federal, represented in the tate of Georgia. The main purpose of the Council is to get the benefit of a mified effort for the war emergency and afterwards. oy The program of the State Agricultural Council does not, in y way, interfere with the carrying out of any county programs lready under way. _ Any worthwhile program in any county can be carried on as part of the over-all program for that county under the State At present there are thousands of good farmers in the state yho are not connected with any program. It is very important for each and every farmer to become a part of the war program regardless of other considerations, _ 2 Many of the more perplexing problems of farmers cannot e solved by farmers alone. Many of the farmers hardest prob- ems require the aid and assistance of bankers and businessmen be solved satisfactorily. One of the principal objectives of the State Agricultural ouncil is to have a setup that can work in conjunction with the orgia Bankers Association. There are different federal agencies already set up that will lend money to farmers under certain conditions, but there is a wide and pressing need for f ancial assistance to farmers of a kind that is not taken care of any federal agency. If a farmer wants to degen a permanent pasture, build fences, buy farm machinery, buy stock cattle, milk cows, brood sows, etc., he does not need to borrow money for thirty years. On the other hand, he eannot use money that has to be ge back in Fresh Fruits and Vegetables. He needs term loans. He needs money he ca pay back in three to five years re this kind of improvement al development. The Georgia Bankers Associate is very sympathetic to this move. On Friday, oe 20, the representatives of these agri tural agencies in each county were supposed to meet and orga ize. After this a meeting will be called in each county of th comes under the program of the State Agricuitaral Counel ant we are working to get these financed by coordinated effort the farmers together with their agricultural agencies, ce The building of these plants is highly important to the pro- duction and marketing of our dairy ee poultry, _ fruits, vegetables, etc. Joining this County Council carries no legal obligation in any way. It is purely an effort to get our farmers on a oun basis for mutual benefit. are facing the most critical fans in the history of oo world: Pea in unity there is strength. George Campbell, care GQ Cc. Hurst, Box 109, Egypt. Hon. Tom Linder, Letter To Mr. aie Athens, Georga. February 5, 1942. Commissioner of Agriculture, Atlanta, Ga, Dear Sir: For quite some time I have been a close reader of your editorials in the Market Bulletin and I wish to compliment you upon their strength and timelyness and the good advice that you offer your readers. In your editorial of yesterday I note reference to scarcity and high prices of commercial fertilizers. It is a sad fact that too many farmers have the idea ap- parently, that fertilizer, in order to be of value, must come out of a sack. In making farm visits as a practicing veterinarian T have been struck, over a period of years, with the wanton waste of good fertilizers on the farms. It is seldom that I visit a farm that I fail to see this loss and wastage of fertilizer which as you know is more val- uable to our soils than ommercial chemical fertilizers as they provide humus and bacteria which is in most instances badly needed in the soils of most farms. I see the stalls of mules and horses filled with an fraccumulation of manure and bedding of several months, so much so that in some cases animals have difficulty in entering and leaving their stalls without bumping their heads on the sills at the top of the stable doors. I see many animals suffering from sores on belly, side and limbs caused by having to lie on a pile of heating or wet manure in order to obtain the rest they need. I see many animals suffering rom dis- eased feet on account of the filthy stalls and barn- yards they occupy. Occasionally I observe cases of chronic bronchitis evidently caused by the long contin- ued inhalation of fumes of ammonia arising from heat- ing manure in the stalls. These same fumes are doubt- less responsible in considerable measure for some of the eye troubles of farm animals. | You, as a practical farmer, must know that in order to get the most value from manure it should be applied to the land in as fresh state as possible. Heat- ing in the stalls releases the ammonia which goes off into the asmosphere as a gas instead of into the soil as nitrates and nitrites. More frequent cleaning of stalls, barnyards, pig pens, poultry houses and all other places around the farm where manure of animals or fowls accumulate will serve the double purpose of supplying a goodly quantity of the, best fertilizers for many farm, garden and truck crops and at the same time rmove from the premises and contact with the farm livestock the causes of many disease conditions which affect our stock and render them less valuable and efficient. Good animal husbandry requires good fant sani- tation as it is well known that filth breeds disease. Accumulations of manure provide facilities for the breeding and development of many forms of insects and parasites harmful and dangerous to both man and animals. Improved farm sanitation by the more frequent and careful removal of manure will serve to make farming and life in the country more pleasant and more profitable in many respects. Do you not think that you might with benefit to the readers call this matter to their attention in the Market Bulletin? | Yours very truly, W. M. BURSON, D. V. M.
