DEPARTMENT 9 : TOM LINDER AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER From 1910 to 1914 the world was at peace, including the nited States. The administration has set up this period as being the ideal rtiy periodnot inflated, not deflated. Taking 1910 to 1914 as a base, the United States Depart- of Agriculture says that. cotton today must bring 17c to fe the same purchasing power that it had at llc during se parity years; wheat, cattle and other crops, of course, in ortion. Today farm prices are in the neighborhood of at the Department says is_parity. Assuming that the Departments conception of parity is ct, no sane man would undertake to say that farm prices nflated when they are only on a parity with prices of 1910 14 when the world was at peace and there was no inflation. As a matter of fact, the United States Department of Ag- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1941. rm Prices Are Depressed. They Are Not Inflate . EDITORIALBy TOM LINDER tures conception of parity is far below actual parity. _ Actually, a cotton grower would have to get 24c per pound day to be able to buy the same commodities that he could buy om 1910 to 1914. He would have to get $1.64 for wheat, and her crops in proportion. When World War No. 1 came along, and afterwards, the erage price of cotton ranged around 22c, or just twice what was before the war started. - If the Department of Agricultures ebnception of parity orrect, then cotton would have to go to.34c per pound before reached war prices. If actual parity is used, then cotton would have to go to i pound before it reached war prices. Wheat would ha to bring more than $2.00 per bushel, corn would have to brin $1.25, beef cattle would have to bring Bees 20c, and so on down the line. If thirty million people received one-fourth of the naan income, nobody could justly and fairly say that they were r ceiving inflationary prices. Thirty million people should receiv twenty-five per cent of the national income! Instead of receiving twenty-five per cent of the national income in 1940, these thirty million people received three pet cent. S Talk of fixing a ceiling on these starvation prices for far products can only come from those who would permanentl; - enslave the farmer. No man who is in favor of fixing a ceili 1g on these low prices is fit to have any authority to fix prices on . anything that the farmer has. ; TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agriculture. _ Livestock Sales and Georgia Auction Markets | Reports received at this office show following average prices paid = for No. 1 hogs at the Live Stock Auction Markets named: es November 28, 1941.
