Rain Boabics Facnec to Sow Crops. By Commissioner - Roberts Rains during the last few days which reports have been pretty general all over the state, able Georgia farmers to sow grain and plant er crops, if they hadnot already done so, ny sections, rains had already come in sufficient ity to permit plowing, and grain is now com- 1p in many sections. : fhe rains since Saturday the 8th, all over - the ne up and in those sections where much rain not fallen, grain may now be sown. is not too late to also plant Austrian peas ned to sow these peas and other CEOS: you do so now. : a great deal next spring. If much corn, and fs are sold for export during the next year or these products may be high in price, So if you e tock, grain planted this. fall may help you out some of this buying. Plans for a big corn next spring also should be planned now. Plan harvest all the grain, corn and roughage next ic that you can. If many mules and horses are used in the nat- | Defense Program, this will also cause an in- ase in the need for feedstuffs. _ LIVESTOCK These prices, quoted by White eeenen ompany, are on strictly corn-fed hogs: HOGS: 180 to 240 lbs., $6.35; 150 to 175 ne + 130 to 145 lbs., $5. 35 down; 240 to 300 Ibs., 10; 300 to 350 lbs., $5.85: good roughs, 180 S 0 Ibs., $5.60. CATTLE: Good fat pechtvis steers and rs, $8 to $9; medium fat, $6 to $7.50; fat fed steers and heifers, $5 to $5.50; com- ion kinds, $4 to $4.75; canners, mostly $3 to 75: good heavy bulls, $5 to $5.50; light bulls, $5; best calves, $8 to $9; medium, $6.50 to 0; common, $5 to $6; throwouts, $3.50 to > Tne te will mean that the grain already sown will other legumes and cover rcops. So if you had A big grain crop will help out the tectl foe een buying much hay and grain for your 50. oes Wickard Invited The national convention of Commissioners of - Agriculture of the United States will be held in New Orleans, December 9-10- ll, and Commission- er Columbus Roberts has invited Hon. Claude Ds Wickard, Secretary of Agriculture in ~President Roosevelts cabinet, to stop off in Atlanta on his way to New Orleans. It is hoped he will visit Atlanta on this trip, meet Georgia people and become better acquainted with Georgia and southern farm problems. ~ Pecan Auction I recently attended the Pecan Auctions at Vi- dalia and was very much impressed with the man- ner of selling Pecans I believe the growers are ben- efitting by these sales, as more farmers are doubt- less getting a higher price for their Pecans than they would if they were not patronizing this Auc- tion. I note that action sales of Pecans are starting in other sections, which must mean that the Vi- dalia market is succeeding. These Auction sales will not only cause com- petitive sales but they will also cause more buyers to come to Georgia. More buyers should mean brisker bidding and a bigger outlet for the nuts. Farmers would likely benefit if more products were sold at Auctions as the bidding likely would be lively if a large number of buyers were present, which would mean the farmer would get top prices for his products. If we could have more auctions and more co- operative sales, I believe the farmers would be helped: This would be a big inducement for produce to be graded, for then the best grades would bring the highest prices. These auction sales and co- operatives would also cause a biigger volume of products to. be graded and sold in any one com- munity. Maybe a carload or truck load of eggs _ chickens, corn, turnips and other products. could be assembled in one community, the sale of which would draw buyers.- This plea might work advantageously in many sections that are not close enough to the various State markets to carry the produce there, to sell it. In riding over the state I notice a large hay crop has been harvested. This will help out the feed problem a whole lot. You will note in another item that the State . Department of Agriculture is in position to make a limited number -of soil tests. You will also see a notice from the Forestry in planting under the AAA program, the Division | yw advance of the usual lifting date. Department about getting whe seedlings to- set __ ! out. Georgia has many, many thousands of acres that should be growing up in pines, the tree that has more uses than any other in the state. It is. hoped the farmers will set out as many trees as possible iis winter. ae Seedlings Ready for Shipment : 4 By the State Foresiry Department t : In an effort to assist landowners in the state a of Forestry, State Capitol, Atlanta, Ga., will begin shipment of pine seedlings from the State Nurser~ 2 ies on next Monday, November 18th. a Every effort has been. made to mature send lings for early setting and the date set is 15 =e : Orders will be filled as. rapidly as possible and shipments will continue throughout the planting season unless interrupted by bad. weather, which would make re-setting inadvisable. Those desiring seedlings are urged to order their shipments promptly and to re-set carey if favorable results are expected. s Your County Agent or local AAA Administiege! or can give you complete details regarding setting of these trees and how to get the AAA benefits, They can tell you how many trees to order, the cost. and other information wanted about the benefits, , a The State Nurseries last season sent out to Georgia planters twenty-one million seedlings, these _ being set on about 50,000 acres. At this rate, Geore gia will soon have a big acreage in young pines. : PRICES OF epeSE VEGETABLES > APPLES, Bu. baskets, Del., No.1 $1.30-$1.40 BEANS, (Lima) bulk, per bu. ee 8S BEANS, (Snap) bu. hampers __.__ 90- 1.00 | CABBAGE, bulk, per ewis ss -75- 85.
