DEPARTMENT TOM LINDER AGRICULTURE COMMISSION ER | UME 24, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1941 EORGIA FARMERS ARE URGED TO ORGANIZE MILK ROUTES By TOM LINDER Commissioner of Agriculture _ T have requests from a number of farmers who say they are ow producing and can produce ten to twenty-five gallons of nilk per day each, but they have no way of getting it to market are not getting enough for sour cream to make it profita- There is a demand now for all the wholesome and sanitary nilk that is produced in the state. It eccurs to me that in many counties it would ss practical or those farmers who ar and can produce limited amounts of lk to organize a truck route to pick up the milk daily at the arms and deliver it to the nearest market. The Department of Agriculture is glad to give every assist- nce possible in helping to work out profitable arrangements af. us kind. I suggest that those farmers living in each community or ounty who are interested in an arrangement of this kind get ogether and see if they can work out an arrangement among emselves. If you need our assistance in any way, let me know. October 7Arlington 8.00- 8.75 October 9Americus 8.50- 8.95 ~ Condensed Statement of Showing Made By Tom Linder, Commissioner of Agriculture, To The Committee In Washington Those contributing to the production of wealth in this country can be roughly divided into three classes: 1. Capital _ 2. Industrial labor 3. Agriculture. It is obvious that capital cannot directly produce | new wealth. Capital can only contribute to the production of new wealt by furnishing finances for the production of crops of raw mate: rial first; and second, by financing industrial activities that tak raw materials and turn them into greater wealth by transform: ing the raw materials into finished products. It is, therefore, easy to be seen that new wealth must furnished either through agriculture and industrial enterprises working together or through the exploitation of one = these branches. Sie For many years, beginning with the first obs draeuts of pre- tective tarriffs new wealth, which is another name for profits, was furnished by both agriculture and industrial labor. Industrial labor is now so high and thoroughly organize that it is able to demand and receive an equitable pare in. the distribution of new w ealth or profits. Agricultural labor, including both farm operators and hiree help, is still unorganized and still unable to demand or receive a just division of the product of its labor. In 1910 all the persons living on the finds in the United States received $139.00 each in cash. In 1910 each person in on United States ce did live on the farm received $482.00, while in 1940 y received $700.00 each, or an increase of $218.00 ie ece against an increase of 00 eDiets fe those yn the farms. Peis At the present time in ine South it is not uncom- shing their own capital investment and their own working for $161. 00 per annum or less. At the same time if you pass by an industrial nt employing the most unskilled labor you will nd they are paying from $2.40 a day on up. Two dollars and forty. cents a day amounts to 8.80 in twelve months. Those who are receiving ty cents an hour can make $998.40, while those ho are receiving fifty cents, an hour can make $i, - O per year. rs If we assume that there are an average of five le on each farm, three of whom are able to work, yearly income of those three who actually work iid amount to $218.00 each, while the average of mon unskilled labor. amounts to not less than $1,- 00 per year. vied is easy to see that one unskilled laborer work- n industry, even out in the agricultural sections, oes capital, and is the backbone of the com- in which he lives. products without first equalizing the farmer the industrial worker will make it impossible for farmers to produce crops of food and other raw erial so vital to the nation for national defense. The administration is going for all out produc- sion of raw materials and finished products of all s in the industrial world. As important as are ships, planes, tanks, guns, 1 other war supplies, they are no more vital to. Remember this, we cannot, with certainty, say we will be able to produce an ample Supply wheat, cotton, meat, etc., in any given year. Weather conditions and other factors beyond control may intervene and bring about a short a ust when the nation is hungry and destitute. is. time for the Congress to take cognizance effective action to insure all out production of and > other farm supplies.
