EPARTMENT 9 (4289 AGRICULTURE - ___TOM LINDER Nay COMMISSIONER VOUME 24. ; WEDNESDAY, AuGuUsT 27, 1941 LACE YOUR COTTON IN GOVERNMENT LOA EDITORIALBy 1 TOM LINDER culture to inspect and enforce the sale of seed in ao with a pure seed law and with rules and regulations promulgat- ed by the Commissioner of Agriculture m menor EOS a that , law. ~ Unfortunately, the Legislature did not provide any fu with which to carry out this work. Hewever, Governor Ta madge has provided funds with which to begin this work | inspecting seeds for the protection of farmers and other buye of seed. - It will be necessary for us to begin this work in a limited way. We cannot undertake control work for those who are in the business of selling seed. They will have to make arrange. ments to get their control work done the same as fertilize companies and feed mills do at the present time. The first and most important sep in the rewire of any crop is the selection of proper seed. : if a mistake is made m this all important step, obtaining the best results is made impossible regardless of what we do after that. If a large proportion of the seed are immature or, for any other reason do nut germinaie, we cannot get a stand. _ Yhere are so many volunteer growths of weeds on most farms in the country. That is the reszson why most seed contain foreign seed or different kinds of seed besides those purchased for planting. One good farmer hi just told me about sowing. a lot of lespedeza. He went to a lot of expense in preparing his land We are going to take samples when called on for the ae and getting it ready for a good lespedeza crop and then when of seed so as to check against ee control work done by the the seed germinated and came up a large percentage of the seedsmen. es plants were coffee weeds. - It is also very common to buy seed and find that they are mixed. Very often you buy seed wheat and find oats and rye mixed with the wheat, or you buy seed oats and find rye and wheat mixed with the oats. There is no work the: Decaamad of heioe can da that is more important than the inspection of seed and the ma. ing of germination tests to protect farmers against unsoun seed and against getting their lands infested with noxious weee : : x seed when they have to buy planting seed. The same applies to grass seed. Very often people sow their lawns and when the seed sprout and the grass comes up eek before last at a meeting of Commissioners of Agri they find that they have different kinds of grass to that they culture in Memphis a committee of commissioners was appoin ntended to plant. ed to go to Washington and seek the adoption of a plan to Until now Georgia has had no seed law.
