DEPARTMENT / TOM LINDER- AGRICULTURE COMMISSION ER TOUME 24. WEDNESDAY, JUNE. 11, 1941. .GRICULTURAL LEADERS | FROM STATES INTERESTED IN GEORGIA MARKETS How The New Market Is Financed | am in receipt of a letter from Honorable Hany D. Wilson, Commissioner of Agriculture of Louisiana, stating that he and a arty of friends are coming to. Georgia to see our State Farm- ers Markets. Since the new Atlanta Market opened on May. 10 we have been selling around $40,000 of farm produce each day. This is a fremendous business. The Thomasville Market, during the month of May, sold more than $109,000 of farm produce. The Valdosta Market, has done equally as well. ; This has been accomplished in spite of the fact that we had ittle facilities for grading farm produce. Two weeks ago I notified you through the Bulletin that I had purchased grading belts for the markets at Thomasville, Valdosta and Glennville. If these belts prove satisfactory I ex- pect to get grading belts and other grading and packing facilities or all of the markets in the state. This is very important because the small farmers cannot provide themselves with adequate facil- ities for grading and packing. Ima book entitled Marketing of Agricultural Products by Boyle and published in 1925, | find the following statements which I think cover the ground as well or better than I could: Reasons for Inspection and Grading. There are many oe for epee Hon grading, and standardization of farm pro- Livestock Sales and Georgia Auction Markets Reporte: received at this office show following average prices paid for No. 1 hogs at the Live Stock Auction Markets named: ducts. This is particularly true of fruits and vouetahiee ehic now have very incomplete standardization. A few of the comm business reasons for standardization may be enumerated as fe lows: Consumers Heniend Grading of Foodstuffs. The bulke of the food the consumer buys has been thoroughly sorted, culled and graded. Somebody does this grading for the consumer and charges for the service. The farmer pays for it. _ Grading Decreases Marketing Costs.Standardized | pr ducts are sold by grade, not by personal inspection, and this alone represents a great saving. Standardization lessens risks, cheapens financing, cheapens transportation by reducing lo - and damage, cheapens storage by reducing decay or deteriora tion, cheapens retailing and widens the market. : Marketing Channels. The individual farmer in practi ally all cases has the choice of two or more channels of market- - ing. His choice of agencies is widened to the extent that his commodity is sorted, culled, or graded. The large-scale produce has a distinct advantage here, for he has volume enough to j tify the expense of sorting anid grading, and the use ot telernen or telegraph to find wider or better market outlets. Financing The New Atlanta Market. Governor Talmadge took the initiative last November when the work was begun.on the new market and assumed the respons- ibility of making the money available to pay for the new mark this money being paid out of the State Treasury on requisition . myself, as Commissioner of Agriculture, and on warrants sign ad by the Governor. This money has to he paid back to the Treasury and all ceipts from the Atlanta Market are being used to pay back his (Continued on Page Two) i FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES aor ral nee ee a . es bras Cw Prices prevailing at following State Farmers Markets: a : _ .
