Last fall after L was elected Commissioner of Agriculture I. de a trip through the middle west so that I might see how arm conditions out there compared with our own conditions | L ae theoueh Miscou, oo and other mid-. western states. Pee ee - Tsaw beef, cattleas a as can ie produced. i saw hogs - hat were unsurpassed. I saw grain elevator after grain ele-. ator filled with grain ready to be made into bread for human _ onsum ption and ready to furnish more feed for more animals. Yet, as I rode through those rich farm lands, I noticed and | eard other passengers. on the train remark that the houses ere unkept and unpainted; the roofs were old, and farm ences were badly kept and some of them falling down. To anyone experienced in farm communities, this is. an un- iling sign that the people Oe operate those farms are not naking any money. Back here in. Georgia. we find the farmers producing every- to hing that their allotments will let them produce. Yet, they re. unable to: make ends. meet and many of them are. losing : Livestock Sales nnd Georgia Auction Markets Avril $k Veldosta 2 2 Reports received at this office show following averaee prites paid. for No 1 hogs at the Live Stock Auction Markets named: ; $ 8.00 per CWT 00. ae S282 2 8.35 9 2? : 715 9 Fig. oS ae edge April: 1 Alcan See - April 22Nashville __ S _ April 22-Douglas ~ April 22Macon. Ase u him to grow less cotton, their homes. If you go, into a store to buy the things you Te ad you find that prices are very high. According to Government figures the price of cotton today - would have to be twenty cents per pound for the cotton grower to be as well off as he was during the years from 1909 to 19. 3. The cotton grower is receiving about half that much for : cottton. The cotton farmer is receiving about the same for co ton now as he did from 1909 to 1913. . In other words, ten cents per couud for cotton today buy about as much goods for the farmers family as five cen _per pound would have bought during the years from 1909 te EEO SS, ing cattle, hogs, grain, ete. In a general way, the same holds true with farmers grow- When the farmers complain of this condition they ave. tol The cotton farmer is being told that if he will agree to still further reduce his craps he will be givem s some stamps to buy cotton goods. Tf the cotton farmer is given some cotton | goods to induce and the wheat farmer is given some flour to induce him to grow less wheat, and if the cattle farmer is given some steak and roasting beef to induce. him to raise less cattle, what will be the result?) We have already seen th result. The Government buys beef from Argentina because i says beef is cheaper in Ar gentina than it is in the United States We buy 132,000 bales of cotton in Brazil and ship it to Europe because cotton i is cheaper i in Brazil than it is in the United States In 1915 the State of Georgia planted 4,800, 000 acres in cot- ton. Today Georgias allotment for cotton is a little more than two million acres. Georgias acreage has been reduced approx mately sixty per cent. This is far more than any other one state. Yet today cotton growers of Georgia are being: asked to still further reduce their crops. i Since the beginning of. the AAA the total acreage of oe - in the United States. has been reduced about five million: act 3. - During the same period there has been a reduction Of five million acres in the southeastern states. In other words, the total acreage west of the Mississippi River is the same today that it was before the AAA first began operating. ae peed It would appear from the above that the total reduction. ine cotton acreage has been put upon our own state of Georgia and her sister states of the southeast.
