PDEPARTMENT@ TOM LINDER: ) AGRICULTURE aensaon. ER See ais, TOM LINDER In rast weeks Market Bulletin I gave you information that s available at the meeting of We Southern Commissioners of rriculture in Memphis. In a previous issue I called attention to the fact that one pil- n pounds of cocoanut and palm oil was being brought every ar from the Philippine Islands and East Indies to compete with anut oil and cottonseed oil grown by the: farmers of this ea t seems now that so many ships have been sunk that it is ting down the imports of this cocoanut and ee oil from the ilippine Islands and East Indies. This has caused a rise in the price of. neanut oil a cot: ed oil. It seems that the oil mills are expecting to pay fifty llars or more per ton for peanuts for crushing purposes this I. The price may be sixty-five dollars or even higher. Right w they are offering fifty-five dollars per ton for peanuts for mmediate delivery for crushing purposes. , I understand that the Department of Agriculture in Wash- ton has made a new ruling. Under this new ruling, if a farm- cuts down on his alloted acreage for cotton, he can increase | Li acreage in peanuts the same amount without penalty. Of course, it must be borne in mind that the world is at war ind that everything is uncertain. My own opinion is that if the ar continues another year or two phere is going to be a terrible Livestock Sales and Georgia Auction. Markets Z Reports received at this office show following average prices paid for No 1 hogs at the Live Stock Auction Markets named: Worl: 3Bainbridge _. : $35 per Cw April 4-Metter _.. eee ee 7.45 il 7Sylvester _.. Strange to say, the market price of. peach has declined almost in the same proportion that production ha declined. This is a very unusual situation, The prospect now is for a large crop of peaches this year. During the last ten years the citrus fruits and citrus fruil juices have made great inroads in taking the demand for peaches a4 and turning this demand to oranges, grapefruit, orange juices. and grapefruit juices. Every year when a new model automobile is coming Ade for several months in advance the buying public is reminded by newspaper advertisements, magazine pictures, and radio an nouncements of the fact that anew automobile with new attrac: tions will be on the market in a given time. People in the large cities of the North and Rast who have formerly bought peaches and watermelons, largely forget abo peaches and watermelons from one year to the next. Ns - When peaches and watermelons begin to go on the markee of the North and East there has been no groundwork laid fo marketing them, and the consumers do not anticipate the coming: on the market of peaches and watermelons. It is very important for the peach growers and watermelon growers to have these products advertised in advance. The De- partment of Agriculture is anxious to serve in every way. that we can in marketing these and other crops. It is my hope that we can make a start along this line this year. I hope that some of the leaders among the peach growers organizations and lead a ers of the watermelon growers will get together with the D partment of Agriculture and lets see if we can at least mee small beginning. . Last Tuesday the Executive Committee of the railroads op- erating in the South held a meeting in Atlanta. : I attended the meeting and heard a good many very inter- esting and enlightening discussions ofthe matter of freight rr duction on watermelons. A representative of the A. and P. stores from Chicago was. at the meeting and gave some valuable information in regard to the handling of watermelons and the cost of getting them to market. He stated that watermelons were being brought to Chi- | cago on trucks from Texas and Oklahoma. He also stated that one of these trucks carried practically a carload of watermelons at one trip. They can carry these big loads on account of the (Continued on Page Two) " : Prevailing Wholesale Prices (FOB Points Mentioned) April 12, 1941. Cae Sabiect to Variation. Georgia to Chicago with watermelons must go through the state of Kentucky. On account of the extreme low tonnage which Ken- tucky allows to be hauled on a truck, these trucks - from Georgia cannot carry more than one-half a load. This, of course, gives a great advantage to watermel- ons from Texas and Oklahoma over watermelons from Georgia, in the markets of the Middle-West. I called to the attention of the committee the fact _ that the freight on watermelons from Georgia is more than the traffic will stand. js more than the watermelons bring in the markets. --- | asked the committee to put in a substantial re- duction in rates on melons to be in effect by the be-| ginning of this season, and to give it a trial for at least two years. It is my hope that the committee will see fit In many cases the freight Sincerely yours, TOM LINDER, . ; Commissioner of Agriculture.
