DEPART MENT 2 TOM LINDER AGRICULTURE COMMISSION ER WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5, 1941. | IARKETS AND TRADE BARRIERS DITORIAL By TOM LINDER | Seven years ago there was an old market at Trinity and hington Streets in Atlanta. It was over crowded and there n urgent need for better marketing facilities. Bete In 1935 the present market on Piedmont Avenue was built der my administration. Almost. everyone said there would er be any use for that large a market. The new market had een in operation three months before almost everyone was ring that it was too small. $ : a The most modern, convenient, and largest. market so far as I now of i in the United States, is the one we are now building at n Road and Murphy Avenue. With a proper marketing system and the removal of trade ers at State lines, this market will develop a volume of Dus ess undreamed of a few years ago. The city of Chicago contains three and one half million ple. As many people live in that. one city as there are in the ntire state of Georgia. _A truck going from Ma can carry a full load cept in the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. Kentucky and nessee have load limits of eighteen thousand pounds gross. s includes the weight of the truck. A truck going from Atlanta to Chicago can his carry , out half a load through Tennessee and Kentucky. This means. t it costs almost twice as much to haul produce from Atlanta Chicago as it should cost. oe The city of New York alone has twice as many people as here are in the entire state of Georgia. Philadelphia has more han half as many people as there are in Georgia. There are nough people living in large cities to the north and east of xeorgia to consume all of the vegetables, fruits and truck crops t can possibly be grown by the farm pooulations of the states ast of the Mississippi river. : There is no prenien of finding consumers to use all of products. Our problem is first to develop merchantable an a tractive products and second, our problem :is to deliver th products to the cities where the people live who will cone m _ them. The Constitution of the United Stats provides for recip rocity between states and that each State shall give full f ; and credit to the acts of the other states. This ought to me n that a truck that has complied with the law in Georgia 0 Florida or any other state should be allowed to traverse the hig ways of every other state without molestation. ae The railroads are in wonderful position to help, in bringi g about a restoration of the agriculture of this section by prov ing refrigerated cars at concentration points and hauling th farmers merchandise to the cities of the north and east ata a which the farm produce can afford to pay. The railroads can also help 6 build up the necessary s , agencies to guarantee payment for the. products of the fa when they are delivered on the other end of the Joe TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agricultu Livestock Sales and Georgia Auction Markets eae received at this office show following average prices paid for No. 1 hogs at the Live Stock Auction Markets named: ; February 20 Americus $ 6.95 February 25 Macon - : 6.50-6.909 CWT - February 21 Metter 7.00-7.25 CWT | February 25 Savannah . j February 25 Soperton TOP FED CATTLE ES ee es February 20 Americus - a SUNS Y February 25 Macon _ .... _ 8.00-9.50 CWT February 25 Savannah __... : 7.50-8.00 CWT February 25 Soperton 6.64 CWT MARKET REPORT OF.
