DEPARTMENT TOM LINDER AGRICULTURE COMMISSIONER WEDNESDAY, reas 12, 1941. DITORIAL By TOM LINDER The New York Times of Sunday, January 19, 1941, arried a news item relative to a new market proposed to built in the city of New York. [ quote three paragraphs as follows > One of the problems confronting market planners as been to find a pier, suitable to the railroads, for taking eare of the 440,000 tons of freight, other than fruits and etables, which are handled annually on some of the 8 es it is proposed to include in the market termi- | bout 154,000 carloads of fruit and vegetables are ceived annually by the produce dealers in the Washing- Market area, which now extends over twenty-five cks along the West and Washington streets, and be- een. a ieclay and Hubert: streets. This is about three- urters of all the fruits and vegetables received in New rk City. The wholesale area has grown haphazardly, and it a serious bottleneck.| Perishable foodstuffs are piled h on sidewalks, while trucks block the narrow streets | traffic proceeds at a snails pace. There are wasteful ys which result in much spoilage, and inumerable op- ons which are quite unnecessary. This will give you some idea of the tremendous [ : Reports received at this office show following average orices paid for No. 1 hogs at the Live Stock Auction yer ets named: Potialy.3Masiian 2 $6.72 per cwt bruary 6Macon 20 $6.85 per.ewt mraary 9--Albany {6 $6.65 per cwt mradnry (Metter aT 00 per eet Average price paid for No. 1 hogs in South Georgia io reporting to this office for December was $5.50- ONTACT MEN NEL iDED FOR FARM PRODUC! tral America and Cuba. These vegetables and truck ere have contact men to get those merchants interested in Bre the highway to check on all trucks passing through. amount of vegetables, truck crops, and fruit that is | sumed in the one largest city in this country. rs You. will note that it is proposed to build this m ket along the water front in order to take care of vege tables pind fruits coming in by ship from South and Cen- and part of the fruit should be supplied by a Georgia and other farm sections. | You will also note in the third perme ih ee t reference is made to the congestion of trucks and oth traffic around this market. Those are trucks which hav come to the market to buy. We can load trucks in Geor gia and deliver vegetables and truck crops directly to t places of business of the merchants in New York and sav them the necessity of going into a congested area to mi their purchases. In order to. make a success of this it is necessary - ing directly from trucks from Georgia. It is also necessar to work out with the states through which these truck: have to pass, some kind of an agreement so that truck will not be delayed in transit by State offscers who are on I have been working with some of the higher rail = a officials trying to get them interested in furnishing some contact men to sell carloads of fresh vegetables and tru erops from Georgia in the large cities. The railroads could double and treble their hauling of vegetable and truck crops by aiding the Department 0! Agriculture in contacting prospective birvers in the Nortk and East. I believe ee railroad officials are interes ec and will help. Fresh vegetables in refrigerated cars can be delve anywhere from New York to Chicago almost. as fresh a when they come out of the field. . TOM LINDER, Commissioner of Agrieultur Eggs, Large, Doz.
