MICULT URE of ou MISSIONER v awe WI! : < WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1939. a Pee at the secent writing: Febrnaes 10th, this. tis over- -supplied with turnips, collards and ach, some turnips selling as low as twenty cents dozen in truck lots: One thing operating against e low priced turnips is that their tops are short. they had good tops, they would have sold for rice as much. Another thing, whoever grew these nips took no pains at all in bunching them. The nches were large enough, but the turnips ran all way from the size of your thumb up to as large our fist. This party evidently pulled every- g as he came to it, regardless of size. This is ic. wn for good produce. The short tops on these nips was due principally to a lack of nitrogen n the soil. soda, about five hundred pounds per acre the irst of January, would have doubled the size of hose tops and more than doubled the value of this mans crop. 2d in more being planted than usual, some ers planting several hundred bushels. The t is that green bunched onions are in large pply. Most of these onions are very good. We aw one lot, however, that were put on the mar- t without even being washed. How any farmer 2cts to receive a decent price for dirty pro- e is beyond us. As it happened, these onions re purchased by a dealer on the market who ught them very cheap and who was compelled to rash them thoroughly himself before he could sell em. This farmer had to take about ten cents per jozen less for these onions than if they had been fully skinned, bunched and washed. Further- e, if they had been properly prepared, he could Prices. of. fresh Sopatabice prevailing on State g rmers Market, Atlanta, today, February 11: eans, Lima, per bushel hamper ______$2.25- $2.50 | eans, snap, per bushel hamper _--____-$1.60-$1.75 abbage, Bulk, per 100 lbs, ____-_-_______.75-$1.00_ Ollards, per dozen *hurichess se 40~.50 Ege plant, per bushel hamper ____--_-___: 90-1.00 ustard Greens, per bushel hamper __-__.: 60-.75 ions, green, per dozen bunches _--__-___.. 30-35 eas, green, per bushel hamper _.----_-__ 1.75-1.85 eppers, green, per bushel hamper -_-__ $1.25-$1.50 otatoes, Cobblers, per 100-lb bag _.-_- $1.90-$2.00 adishes, per dozen bunches _.._______-___.35-.40 pinach, per bushel basket. -________---____.60-.75 Spon per bushel hamper: -...-. =. $2.75-$3.00 eet Potatoes, bulk, per 100. lbs... __ $1.10-$1.25 Turnips, bunched. per doz. bunches ________. serie Rl i ee 39-.40 Turnip Salad, per bushel hamper kind. of thing which holds the market price A good, heavy top dressing of nitrate Last fall onion sets were very. cheap, which re- | re made. his bunches smaller and still. san hem ; T for as good a price. Surely fee cents a doten is a high price to pay for washing onions. There must be something lacking in a mans character when he is satisfied to send to market _ produce of any sort and prepared in just any old _ way. Of course we know when a farmer grows a crop of poor produce, because of insufficient fer- tilizer, or care or from whatever cause, he feels he must sell it for something anyway. It might | be well for such a one to figure what he can get - for it before he spends still more money gathering and sending it to market. If possible it might be _ better to sell to some trucker at his farm at even a lower price than he thinks he should receive. This Atlanta State-Farmers Market is peculiar. It is up one day and down the next. When prices . go up, truckers rush produce in here and then | prices go down. And so it goes, you just cant put your finger on it. The only thing to do is to make good produce, prepare it carefully and then when you bring a load to market, see the manager, or - whoever is in charge of the market first, and get a line on what your produce is worth. You will then be in shape to trade and not allow some trader to beat you out of what is rightfully yours. om J. Most of these are raised in fairly good volume and. many other in a smaller z way. I believe there will be some increase in volume planted this year if the weather is favorable. \ << We no doubt can handle some increase easily, as ). our volume is running about a third larger than a year ago and is being handled with a minimum of loss on perishable items. J. W. Daniel, Nanduer? : Glennville and Claxton Markets An extensive volume of tomato oie are being grown in Florida by Georgia plant growers to sup- ply the demand for early planting in these sections. Growers are in hopes of favorable weather condi- tions in order that they may obtain their plants earlier this year and not prolong the planting season later than March 15th.
