There is noth- hat will take the place of actual field tests to . the most profitable grade and, quantity To this end the Georgia Ex- t Station, Experiment, Georgia, made a f trials for eight years on forty-nine farms he following counties in Georgia: Lamar Co., Peach Co., _ Mandolph Co., and Polk Co., to determine the analysis or Oe minsdion 00d : aod the amount per. acre which would ae of this 400 pounds, per acre of 4- 8- 4 ommended, supplemented by 100 pounds ni- ' soda and 32 pounds of muriate of potash e as a top dressing, or added to and mixed he original fertilizer before planting. t es found that while more than 6 per cent ni- | would increase the yield that 6 per cent gave rgest profit above its cost. The same applied pa these. trials is given in Bulletin 196 en- Cotton Fertilizer for Georgia Soils, issued In studying this bulletin an. allowance made because of the increase in the pres- ice of fertilizing materials. , it s seems to us that these tests by our Ex- rices of F beak Veretubles . If for any reason you find it impos- _ sible to spend this amount of money for fertilizer on an acre why not in this event use the fertilizer suggested only use less of it per acre. tive combination of the different elements of plant food nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash is the main thing: used up to between 500 and 600 pounds per acre. It is folly for any ctinee to purchase a low grade fertilizer just because it is cheap. For, as a matter of fact, the cheaper it is the more it really costs. me You have in a 200 pound sack of guano 200 pounds of enert matter, dirt or sand, if you please, contain- ing different quantities of plant food nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash, as shown by the ana- lysis on the sack. This plant food is what you pay for and naturally the higher the analysis the more plant food the sack of guano contains. Therefore, the higher the analysis the higher the price. We contend that a farmer has plenty of dirt and sand already on his farm, so that it isnt necessary to buy it and haul it home and distribute it in his field in order to make a crop. Now, our new fertilizer law in Georgia requires that the manufacturers of fertilizer show nitrogen in whole numbers and do away with all fractions. It also required that not less than 14 per cent or pounds of plant food nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash be contained in each 100 pounds of fertiliz- er. This is to keep the farmer from buying so much extra dirt or sand. The makers of the law would have liked to have made the minimum amount of: plant food 16 per cent as it is in Alabama but so much opposition was encountered that 14 per cent was finally agreed upon. The law also requires that nitrogen be shown first, phosphoric acid sec- _ ond and potash third. There are 34 different grades or combinations of ~ analysis allowed under the new Georgia law, while Alabama has but 13, Texas has 24, and Louisiana It would seem, therefore, that 34 grades has 25. should take eare of every possible requirement. It so happens that there is no 6-6-6 among the grades included under the Georgia law. but there are grades so close to this that they would work out all right in practice. Then there is an 8-8-8, which used at the rate of 400 pounds per acre would ac- complish the same result. The main thought, however, that we wish to leave with you is that you are buying plant food and not tonage. . Also, that you try when doing this to purchase a fertilizer that will supply the needs -of your crop. pate dois The rela-_ oe Sate Pr orrndulas to : Replace Old 2 From the Georgia Coastal Plain Experi- ment Station, Tifton, Georgia. ulas that were formerly known as 3% ammonia gen, or an increase of approximately 20% in the 2 nitrogen content over the old formulas. ~ erease will make it necessary to reduce the applica tion from 1000 pounds to 800 pounds per acre of 3% nitrogen goods in order to hold the nitrogen bacco. However, 800 pounds of fertilizer carrying only 8% phosphorus will reduce the phosphorus ap- _ growth and ripening. to 900 pounds per acre to replace the old. 8-3-8 (PNK ammonia basis) and that a 3-10-7 be used at the same rate to replace the old 8-3-5 (PNK ame monia basis). Fertilizer manufacturers have made known their intention of putting these formulas on_ the market so no difficulty should be esperieacen in securing them. | The new formulas of 3-10-10 and 3-10- 7 are ex-= pressed in terms of nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash in the order named.
