tj HYP : cc KW \\! NN) "y lS = UME 22 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1938 NUMBER 21 _ E FARMER PAYS THE FREIGHT | ay COLUMBUS ROBERTS: : a petition fetors the Public Ser- ommission, the railroads are asking a change in the present carrying otton according to the present law a y quantity at ten cents per hundred ifty mile haul. Seventeen cents. for hundred miles and twenty-two cents wo hundred miles. They claim they e these smaller lots in many cases at yss and ask for a schedule of rates which id tend to bring them together into sand pounds each for which they pro- > to make a rate, corresponding to the sent interstate rate, making this rate sly back to any point where the smaller yments originated. They figure that - would throw to them much of the cot- that is now being handled by truck. is for a fifty mile haul, would be nine present rate ten cents, on one hun- miles seventeen cents, present. rate teen. On two hundred miles twenty- ents, present rate twenty-two cents, ree hundred miles forty-two cents, nt rate thirty-two cents. Whether btful to our minds. In fact, most gin- s and handlers would, we should think, fer the present simple (any quantity and if any increases were made, id give all their cotton to trucks. This attitude was voiced by Mr. E. J. , President of the Planters Gin and wufacturing Company of Jonesboro, hen he said, You tell them if they 1e rate up I will haul all my cotton to ta by truck. I have shipped quite a of cotton by rail this year, but a change ? ite from ten to twelve cents per hun- would be a deciding factor in favor Die: truck. I am making an honest ef- | to obtain every cent I can for the ers of this community from their cot- sg on cotton. They object to han-. s of twenty-five thousand or fifty. The carload rate on one hundred would work out as they hope is very what the amount, has its influence on the price I am able to pay. From this and others from whom we have heard express themselves along the same line, we are of the opinion that if the railroads in Georgia want to give up the majority of their short haul cotton bus- iness, putting this new rate into effect is a good way to do it. We sympathize with the railroads. They are no doubt having a hard time like the rest of us. They are a vital part of our present economic system. We need them to move our coal, our lumber, our long haul produce, but at the same time, the cotton farmers of Georgia are having a hard time and are not in position to take on any additional burdens. To give you some idea of just how these new rates would apply, you will be Interested in the following example: Proposed New Intrastate Rates On a fifty mile basis the present rate is ten cents, proposed rate, any Seen: twelve. cents, earload nine cents. On a one hundred mile basis the present rate is (any quantity) seventeen cents, proposed rate twenty cents; on carloads it would be seventeen. One hundred and fifty mile basis, present rate nineteen cents, proposed rate, any quantity, less than carlot twenty-five cents, carload twenty- -two cents. Two hundred mile basis, present rate twenty- two cents, proposed rate thirty cents, less than car- lots; on carlots, fifty bales, twenty-eight cents; one hundred bales twenty-six cents. The interstate carload one hundred mile haul is seventeen cents, proposed rate does not affect | does not affect interstateeaisroiaeaisrlefyvgqxeas interstate rates. In other words, the proposed rate would increase the Georgia rates to correspond, with the interstate rates. To illustrate: From Atlanta to West Point: The rate to West Point Mill on any quantity is now sixteen cents. To Lanett, Ala., across the river, it is nineteen cents. Under the new rate West Point will pay nineteen cents. New regulation would not affect cotton Ripped out of the state. y The history of cotton rates in Georgia over rates or any other expense for that matter, but how is the mighty fallen! So now it seems we must hold: to ev- a8 ery cent. We must grow our cotton cheap- er, make more per acre, build up our land with soil conserving crops, so we can com- -pete with the western states and we must put into effect every possible saving in the. handling and marketing of our crop. For _ these reasons we must go on record as op- posed to the proposed new rates. At our request the Public Service Commission has postponed the final hear- ing on this rate matter until December 20th, at which time they will not. only hear from the railroads, but from any gin- | ner, cotton merchant or farmer in Georgia who can show they have a real interest in this matter. In fact the Commission will welcome such testimony. . Truck Farming We are continually receiving letters request=. Bey ing information about truck farming, what to plant and when to plant to make money. Our experience is that unless one has bottom wes land or irrigation or both, truck farming cannot. _ be made really profitable in middle Georgia. If the weather turns dry, vegetables on upland will prove to be a failure, while when we have good seasons and plenty of rain, there is an over supply that will not sell for enough to pay expenses. In South Georgia where marketing centers are established and vegetables shipped in carlots, the case is different. Here a crop can be grown in aI the winter and early spring and put on the market before the weather turns dry and while there is a good market at the north before these markets are supplied locally or from localities to the north of South Georgia. Also in the mountain section vegetables may be grown successfully and put on the market in midsummer when these crops of Irish potatoes, cabbage and beans come on after the local supply begins to fail or is cut short by summer drouth. This applies to most standard vegetables, such as cabbage, beans, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, etc. : : Sans : F. J. M. nd every added expense, no matter the last fifty-eight years is interesting. # : : : On a fifty mile haul in 1880, it was twenty cents; in 1882 nineteen cents; in 1918 thirty-four : cents; in 1920 forty-three cents; in 1922 thirty-nine Prices of Fresh Vegetables Atlanta Market Report cents; in 1923 thirty-three cents.
