VOL. 21 WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1937. : Letters and Wires from Packers of Especial _ Interest to Hog Raisers -: It is the purpose of the Marketing Division of the State Department of Agriculture to keep in touch at all times with conditions affecting the market- ~ ing of Georgia crops as these crops*move to mar- _ket, and present this information through the Mar- ket Bulletin to the farmers of Georgia for their es to ae decisions as to how, when and where O se j _ / Just now farmers are moving their hogs to mar- i ket in larger volume, so naturally we have kept in close touch with the various markets of the na- tion, especially the Chicago market, because it is the leading livestock market of the country and in _ comparing quotations on the various grades of hogs being made by the larger packers of Georgia with prices being quoted on the Chicago market for the same grades, it appeared to us that our _ number two hogs weighing 150-180 pounds should , bring more money than the present quotations of =o iq- 2c off number ones; For this reason, we wired __, the larger packers of Georgia for their reasons for this differential so we could transmit it to you for _ the basis of your hog marketing conclusions. There is a mand from certain small packers who buy on Chicago. market for these light hogs and bec they are so very scarce the competition for particular weights is holding the market price these hogs at the top of the market. : -In the southeastern states at the present ti the farmers are marketing sixty per cent of th hogs that range from 150-180 lbs, or No. 2 h as they are designated in this section. There twice as many No. 2 weight hogs being: markete in the southeast at present than we have ever seen marketed before. This places a burden upon packer who is compelled to sell the cuts from th light weight hogs at less money than can be ob tained for cuts from hogs weighing 180-240 1 and besides, the dressing yield on the No. 2h is at least 3 per cent less than on No. 1 hogs of th heavier weights. This fully justifies the differet in price between the different weight class: 1-2c per pound. If Georgia farmers have sufficient feed left avoid marketing No. 2 weight hogs, all meat pi ers would welcome them holding back these 1 hogs until they can be sent to market weig 180 Ibs. or over. .
