The total United States estimate on November lst was 73,774,000 bushels -as compared with October estimate of 75,058,000 - bushels and a 1936 production of 64,144,000 bushels. Offerings on the Atlanta market have been light during the past two weeks and available supplies of field run stock have been disposed of at slight- dy higher prices. Load lots were valued at mostly $1-1.15 per hundred: pounds today. Turnip salad has been dull and there has been little activity - to the market in spite of rather light offerings. The market has been practically bare of cabbage for several days, but there is little demand for cabbage at higher prices. Most sales have been from 75c- $1.25 per Hundred pounds bulk during the past week. (November 11.) This situation has brought. about wasteful practices in our farming operations so that - our land has grown poorer during our stewardship and less eapable. of supporting the coming sees for which we- are responsible. Many of us do appreciate these facts: but we seem to be the victims of circumstances over which we have no control and sometimes we do not really do as welt as we know pow te do and could do if we tried. In this connection, most of us who own-our farms have some land in woods or some thin or hilly land which could be allowed to grow up in pines or could be planted to pines. Did you know that an acre of pine trees properly taken eare of should bring in a yearly income of from $1.00 to $1.75 an acre? In a recent article in the Progressive Farmer Dr. Charles Herty, who is Director of the Pulp and Paper Laboratory at Savannah, is quoted as saying: *T believe that the fast growing slash and loblolly pines can be counted on to earn $1.25 to $1. 75 per year net profit. : The weakest point in the wood situation in the South. today, he continues, is the contractor system of buying pulpwood. Having no future interest. in the land, the con- tractor tries to buy at the lowest possible price. Of eourse, we are saying to farmers dont. give your timber away, but many of them will get in a tight and have to have some cash. Then they take anything they ean get. : - gr. Herty made the statement, that mills ee see to it- that the farmer gets at least $1.00 per standard cord (128 eubic feet) for stumpage so ete will be encouraged a raise wood. Up in Canada, the pails: pay $1.00 to $1. 50 per toed fox stumpage with wood delivered to the mill at $7.50 to $9.75 _ most nothing to maybe 50c or 60c per long cord (160 cubie feet.) J Destructive - quad atins Pte southern farmers seal mill men without heed to the future and. willingness on the part of farmers to sell wood at any price and a mill Policy of. body concerned. Our farmers should look upon their timber as a real asset, a source of wealth which, if properly cared for, will eventu- ally produce a steady income for Pres in our declining - years and for our children. To do this, care must be exercised first to see that fire is kept out. Second, that the timber is carefully and gradu= ally thinned so as to bring the largest return in turpentine, pulpwood and saw timber. Also, the stand of timber should be continuously renewed with young trees. This is com- 7 paratively simple where fire is kept out. A.D. McCraney, Commissioner of Dodge County, believes . the answer is to plow up the wiregrass and sow oats in the ' fall, followed by Lespedeza and then carpet grass on the damp, low spots, this in order to make real nutritious pasture for beef cattle and hogs, all of which works in nicely with paratively easy matter. Above ail things, dont give your timber away. G. D. Cook, of the U. S. Forestry Service, estimates that the ca- pacity of pulp and paper mills puilt and being built is 3,- 900,000 cords annually, This amount of wood in cords end to end would build a wall of pulpwood four feet wide and more than four feet high clear around the eleven southern states as a unit and build a wall four feet wide and six and one-half feet high clear across the United States from New York to San Francisco, said Mr. Nunn, in his article in _the Progressive Farmer. - Continuing, he estimates an annual wood eee of 4,157,000 cords. Under any sort of sound forestry manage-_ lion acres while we have 200 million aeres. of oneniak timber land in the south. _ Dr. Herty is quoted further as saying: No other section of the country has the potential ee bilities for supplying the future lumber and pulpwood needs .- of the nation as does the South. Where the net income climbs to $140,000,000 from forest sources, the total income might be a billion dollars, maybe more. A dollar a cord _for pulpwood in the. woods means $4 to $5 spent by the time it gets to the mill; $3 or $4 in the woods for sawlogs means today $17. 50 to $40 when it gets to the market. It is estimated. that our Southern forests can supply direct, perm- amt employment at living wages to at least a half-million workers, thereby providing a living for two million people. The pretty part about the whole picture is that pulpwood, _turpentining; the woods can be thinned for pulpwood, later for ties, ete., and ae a highgrade tumber crop is left.
