\ + DEPARTMENT f < G.C. ADAMS. yy AG RICULTURE. Ol mmm are PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS J. ce GREER, DIRECTOR STATE CAPITOL ATLANTA, ee THURSDAY, ee q, 1984. oo a very wide difference in the price of various rades of hogs, this spread in some of the grades has more | doubled especially on light hogs and pigs. ccording to the quotations on F ebruary 15th number one hogs was quoted at 4 cents, number 2 hogs was quoted 1-2 under the price of number 1 hogs, wurber3 at three- wrth cent under, number 4 at one-one fourth cent under eae 5 at two cents under and sows and stags at one On osust 16th, 1933 this same Siar quotations was our cents for number ones which was the same price for mber ones as was quoted on February 15th, 1934, and spread oe the different grades was as follows: iber twos ne-fourth cent under number one s, hum- threes Le half cent under, number fours three-fourth ent under, number fives one cent under, sows and stags ee-fourth cent under. Check back on the differences nd it will show that the base price was the same on Au- t 16th, 1933 as it was on F ebruary 15th, 1934, and the ifference in the spread between the grades j is froin one- ourth cent to one cent more now than on August 16th, 33. Generally when the price of hogs get high the apread widens, but with Tage as cheap as they are, there seems no reason for this wide difference i in the grades. ae I have been checking up on the number of small hogs: and pigs that dre being sold at Co-operative sales since January 1st and find that of the total number of head of hogs sold through the Bureau of Markets about adie percent of them were light hogs and pigs weighing from _ 140-pounds down to 60 pounds, which looks like too many pigs are now being sold I would like to suggest to the hog growers not to sell their small hogs and pigs now if it is. possible to hold to them because of the very low price being paid for such hogs and also | have known some of the packers to. bidlow on a hog-sale because of the large number of pigs being offered, this penalizes every hog in the sale and causes a loss to all who are selling in - that sale. So it is possible to loose two ways when these | small hogs and pigs are sold. The price is slowly i improving and the chances are hogs _ 1 will be higher by fall and if it is possible to keep the pigs = off the market now there is a chance to make money two ways instead of possibly loosing two ways, the supply of | hogs in Georgia no doubt is less now than a year ago and unless this young stock is held on the farms there might - be a shortage of hogs next. season, oie k.
