DEPARTMENT. 9f G.C. ADAMS. S. AAG RICULTUREL. 4-COMMI SSL ONERS PUBLISHED BY THE BUREAU OF MARKETS STATE CAPITOL. ATLANTA, GEORGIA. ee Ser fe: oo 4, 1934. MORE ABOUT LEGUMES Two weeks ago I had an editorial in the Bulletin on s. | wish to further insist on the planting of these crops. he farmers ef Georgia are gpending millions of dollars undreds of thousands of tons of commercial fertilizers of- osting half the value of the crops on which they are used. Over every acre of lands in our State there hangs suspended air three million dollars worth of nitrogen. The best to extract this nitrogen is the legume. If we go at this of legumes in earnest it seems to me that we would be 3 on to get away from commercial fertilizers to a large A ood a of Vetch and Closer, Velvet beans, Soy beans: ustriam peas will produce the equal of three hundred ounds of fifteen percent nitrate of soda and five tons of stable ure to the acre. This much plant food will cost $25.00, hile the cost of growing the legumes will be about two dollars. saw at Pelham on the farm of Mr. J. J. Beni. one of | eorgias leading Poultrymen, large fields of com following and Velvet beans that would produce forty bushels of corn to the acre on kick not a dust of Boe fertilizer had been used for years. What Mr. Harris has done, others can do. ae By the experience of thousands of farmers anal the Ex- periment Stations in the South, a good crop of legumes will increase corn yield by more than twenty bushels per acre. Do not fail to inoculate the soil. The Department of Agriculture is continyin the distribu- tion of legume incculation at cost. Prices of Legume cultures furnished by the State of Georgia have been adjusted to meet economic conditions and new cultures are being added to those furnished in the past for legumes that are beginning to be used in the State. The. prices of these cultures are 25c per acre when ordered in quantities less than five acres. The five acre size now sells for $1.00, the difference in price for the larger size being due to a saving in packing botiles and postage. PLEASE SPECIFY the kind of loca fer which inocula- cy tion is desired, whether for Cow peas, Velvet bea ssi Peanuts, Sey beans, Alfalfa, Clover, Vetch, eic. Gog.
